We got into the car, and as it pulled into the evening traffic, Lucien twined his fingers with mine and pulled out his phone with his free hand. He tapped the screen, then held it up for me to see.
“Congratulations, Kai.”
I was about to ask what for when I realized what he was showing me. My profile on the test page, along with my final score for all the tests.
My jaw dropped. “I passed?”
“You didn’t just pass. You excelled.”
I looked between him and the score, and as the realization hit, so did the relief. I’d been studying so hard for months, and with that number, a huge weight was lifted off my shoulders.
“I did it,” I said, breaking into a huge grin. “How did you?—”
“Alessio. But before you give me shit about asking him to hack it, just know he did that on his own. He didn’t want you to be stressing all night about it, not when you should be enjoying yourself.”
“Thank God.” I wrapped my arms around Lucien’s neck and held him tight. “I was going crazy. Tell him I said thank you.”
“You can tell him yourself.”
I leaned back, and Lucien’s eyes swirled with mischief.
“You ready for a night out?”
“LEVEL EIGHTEEN?” I said as Lucien pushed a button in Libertine’s elevator. “We’ve never been there before.”
“No, we haven’t.” Lucien winked but gave me nothing else as the car whooshed up several flights uninterrupted, and whenit dinged on the selected floor, I narrowed my eyes on the suspiciously quiet man beside me.
“Is this another one of your clubs?” I asked. “Let me see, if level five has mild or wild sides, is this an ‘out of this world’ level? Or maybe ‘another stratosphere’?”
Lucien chuckled as the doors slid open, then took my hand. “We’re going to have to discuss what you thinkthosefloors would entail later. But for now you’re going to have to settle for something a little less intimate and whole lot more…inclusive.”
I frowned as Lucien led me down a hallway to a set of double doors. When he pushed them open and a light flicked on, an enormous ballroom came into view, full of people cheering and clapping, his brothers included.
What the?—
“Congratulations,” everyone shouted as I stared at the group, completely overwhelmed. There was no way they were all here for me.
“I know, I know,” Lucien said as he kissed my temple, “you didn’t want to plan anything in case things didn’t go your way, but I knew better.”
I turned my head to look into his twinkling eyes. “Is that right?”
“You’re my boy—of course I know what’s best for you.” His lips found mine, proclaiming loud and clear to everyone whom I belonged to, and that just made the cheering get even louder.
“Okay, you bunch of voyeurs,” Lucien told them as he broke the kiss. “That’s all you’re going to get.”
“Marshmallow,” Benoit said, aiming a smirk at Lucien, then he pulled me in and kissed both my cheeks. “Bravo, mon cher. We’re so proud of you. Especially this guy right here. Was pestering poor Alessio all afternoon for those results, he was.”
“Pestering? But I thought you just said?—”
“Maybe I mentioned wanting the results early once or twice. Is that a crime?” Lucien asked.
“No, but what Alessio did?—”
“Is like a drop in the ocean compared to other things he’s done.”
I couldn’t help but laugh at the good-natured banter between the two of them, loving how open Lucien was with his brothers about the two of us.
It was sexy as hell.
