“Huh,” her sister said again in a careful tone.
“What’s going on?” Harley asked.
“Mom got a call from Lance last night. He’s really upset by something you’re doing.”
“Okay cool. Tell him to go whine about it to his girlfriend, whom he has been living with for a year, and fucking for two years. Anything else?” she asked defensively.
“Well, he said you’re stepping out of the marriage.”
“Mmm,” she said, sitting up in the bed. Her blood was beginning to boil. “Stepping out of my marriage. That doesn’t sound like words he would say. How did he really put it.”
“That you’re cheating.”
She belted out an offended laugh. “Seriously?”
“Well, that’s one part. There’s more.”
“Okay,” she gritted out. “Lay it on me.”
“Two of mom’s friends called her asking about it last night too. Lance is getting the word out there.”
“What the hell?” she asked, fury dumping into her system.
“Why are you still in Darby?” her sister asked. “You were supposed to come home after you saw Cash.”
“I decided to stay a few days, which I tried to talk to you about, but you haven’t been picking up my calls or responding to my texts,” she reminded her again. “I literally sent you a picture of my motel room.”
“Who are you with?”
Harley felt slapped. “Why are you asking me that?”
“Just answer the question.”
“Currently I’m in my motel room completely alone. Later I have plans to meet up with some new friends. Are you accusing me of cheating?”
Harley was met with silence on the other end.
Harley closed her eyes and exhaled slow, praying for patience. “Do you know how you should’ve handled this?”
“How?”
“Ask me. Don’t listen to my idiot ex-husband, who needs to wreck my reputation to make himself feel better about what he has done to me. Askmewhat’s going on. Ask your sister.”
“Okay. What’s going on?”
“Lance has been freaking out over the court date on Tuesday, and I stayed here so I don’t have to deal with that asshole showing up on my doorstep and overstepping boundaries. He’s been going to my house. It messes with my head.”
“You’re still technically married—”
“So is Lance, and yet you aren’t talking to him about cheating on me or moving in with Alissa. Not once this entire time. But the second you think I’m moving forward, you’re going to what? Lecture me?”
“Are you with Cash,” Carolina asked softly.
That simple question silenced her. “Well…yes, but—”
“No but, Harley. It’s a yes or no question. Are you with my ex?”
Okay, what? “No, because Cash isn’t your ex. We have it narrowed down to a few guys we think you were actually talking to, none of whom are Cash. You don’t know him.”
