Page 16 of Worth It All

Ever since Charles smashed that camera, I’ve been on edge. His threat was empty. He couldn’t get the job done before. He sure as shit can’t do it now. He’s weak and always has been. I admit, the Bastards have grown under his leadership. But they’ll be thriving under mine.

I take a long drag from my cigarette, patiently waiting for Davina. Well, not patiently but I am waiting.

She doesn’t come outside though. Not tonight. The little blonde I released is who brings the trash out, her old man in tow. I almost got him. He has the burn scars on his arms as proof.

I could kill them both now. It does cross my mind. But I like the fact they’ve come off lockdown. If I take another one of them out now, they’ll shut down again and that only makes my job more difficult.

Besides, I made a change in my plans. I don’t want to destroy the Bastards. I want to lead them the way I was always meant to and with Davina by my side.

It’s my brother I want to destroy. What better way to do that than to take everything from him the way he did me?

Mason hangs out with Owen most of the night, stealing sexy glances in my direction ever so often. I’d like to say he looks like he’s having fun but he doesn’t. They’re deep in conversation, barely playing pool.

“You won’t believe this,” Sloan says. “Someone killed Aiden. Stabbed him in a men’s bathroom. Crazy, right?”

“That is crazy,” I mumble in disbelief.

It had to be Collin. It’s the only thing that makes sense. “I need some fresh air. Be right back.”

I step outside the back door, looking around for him. My gut tells me he’s here.

“I know you’re there,” I call out. A few seconds later, he emerges from the shadows. “Did you do it? Did you kill him?”

He shrugs. “You deserve better than a man who doesn’t make you come, sweetheart.”

“So, you kill him? Just like that.”

“You seem surprised. I’m more surprised that Charles didn’t take care of it himself. Guess he never was much of a fighter.”

“He’s just nothing like you. He doesn’t kill innocent people.”

His jaw clenches in anger. “How long did you wait before you started fucking him? A week? Days?”

“You left without a word. Besides, we both know you only liked the idea of me. You were too wild to be tied down.”

“Funny. Charles basically said the same thing.”

“He was always the smart one,” I say.

“No, he was always the safe one. The one who never takes risks. How much do you think he’ll risk to take me down? Your life? Your son’s life? How old is little Charlie?”

“You won’t hurt me or my son.”

“Maybe. Maybe not. Every war has innocent casualties. I promise you this. I will kill my brother. It’s just a matter of time. Everything he’s taken from me will be mine.”

My stomach churns. I thought I loved him once. Thought I knew him. All I know now is that he’s a monster.

Davina is quiet when we get to her place. She barely spoke to me at The Haven, seemingly avoiding me. I was busy talking with Owen so I didn’t make a big deal about it.

“What’s wrong?” I ask.
