“Don’t worry about it.” She waves him off. “Try to find where they took the baby, also do you have a record of what the baby is? I know you fucks are all about crossbreeding, so I know she’s not just a witch like her mother.”

Adam scrolls through the information on display. His eyebrows pull together as he squints at the screen, I saw a pair of glasses next to his untouched poured drink by his chair, but I’m not going to offer to go grab them for him.

“This says Thalia’s embryo was a cross between witch, demon, and human, but when we tested the baby when we got back here, the human part of her made up most of her DNA, which is why she was taken to auction.” He talks about the babies like they’re cattle.

I notice Winslow bites at her bottom lip, her brows furrow like she’s thinking hard about something.

“Where’s the auction?” I ask him, but keep an eye on Winnie.

He scrolls farther down. “It’s in New York.” He pauses. “It doesn’t say where, that information isn’t shared with a lot of people. Only Sterling and the procurers know where they take place. Sterling figured the fewer people who knew, the better. I’m not involved in the auctions; I just supervised the Vancouver location for Nicolai. And as you know, that location is no longer operating.”

I grin. “I know. My family is the reason it’s sitting empty and my sister-in-law is why Nicolai is six feet under with a gaping hole in his neck.”

Adam gasps. “You’re one ofthem? You’re related to the white wolf, that Pruitt girl?”

“She’s my brother’s mate.”

Adam tries to turn around so he can look at me, but I stop him. “Your family needs to be careful. Sterling is still bitter about what happened with Pruitt, that she got away from the facility. Nicolai may have been the one who took Pruitt, but make no mistake, Sterling wanted her there just as much as Nico did.”

“Why does he want her?” Winslow asks.

“He doesn’t tell us things like that, but I see it in his face when he talks about her… he wants her. And he’ll eventually come for her,” Adam tells her.

“And we’ll be waiting,” I promise.

“You’re fools if you think you can take him out.” He even sounds scared of Sterling. “But, I don’t know where in New York the auction will be, but it says it’s taking place in twenty-four hours and the baby you’re looking for will be there.” Adam starts to close his laptop,

Winslow reaches out and stops him. “Wait...” She chews her lips for a second before speaking again. “I need you to look up another name in your system.”

Adam looks at her.

“Who?” I question.

“Look up Amara Dupre.” Winslow’s eyes dart to mine quickly. “I have a hunch.”

Is this what she’s been over there thinking about this whole time?

I frown. “You think Amara was taken by Sterling?”

She shifts in her seat nervously, “I think it all fits. Amara just disappears off the face of the earth and no one ever sees her again, but somehow she has a baby that’s adopted by a rich couple who couldn’t conceive themselves…” She trails off, shrugging her shoulders. “I could be wrong—Iwantto be wrong—but I just need to be sure.”

It does make sense, I’ll give her that.

Adam opens his computer again and searches the name. I can basically see Winslow hold her breath as the page loads, the icon in the middle spins and spins. I want to reach out and hold Winslow, to comfort her, but I can’t risk taking my hands off Adam.

Winslow jumps off the desk so she can look at the screen directly. She bounces on her toes next to me as we wait, her heart beats loudly in her chest and I swear it stops when the image loads on the computer screen.

Just like the picture of Thalia, a picture of Amara shows up on the screen. Unlike Thalia, Amara doesn’t look scared, she looks tough as nails as she stares back at the camera, completely undaunted. The fire in her eyes reminds me so much of Winslow. Seems my little witch got her fearlessness from her mother.

“OhGod.” She breathes. “I really wanted to be wrong.”

Winslow is a product of Sterling’s breeding program.

“What does it say? What happened to her?” I can physically see her trying to shake off the shock.

Adam reads the page. “She died giving birth to a child twenty-two years ago, she hemorrhaged, and they tried everything to stop the bleeding, but they couldn’t save her.”

I doubt they tried everything to save her. I would bet money they just let her bleed out like they did Thalia, but I don’t say that aloud.
