Because he suggested we ride with him,I reminded my Corsican.
I could sense him sneering. He can’t drive for shit.
I’m aware, just…relax.
We’re going to be picking glass out of our skin if he doesn’t slow down soon,my entity was threatening to take over my body and beat the shit out of Carmine.
“So, what was that about at the bar back there?” Carmine asked slamming the breaks.
A Prius in front of us was sitting at a green light, oblivious. He hit the horn, and it blared loudly through the car. Whoever was driving in front of us stuck their middle finger out the window.
“Fuck you, buddy!” Carmine’s voice had changed into a full blown roar, the power inside of him flaring to life briefly. “Hold on!”
“Huh?”
Confusion clouded my face and before I knew it, my brother was on the car’s ass. As soon as he had the chance, he floored it. The sleek black Chevy crossed over the double lines and passed the Prius. I had my window down and could hear the driver of the cussing us out over the wind that was gliding over the car.
Finally, as we pulled away from the traffic, I responded. “What was what about?”
“You, and Rain,” Carmine was so pointed in how he responded sometimes.
“There’s nothing going on,” I shrugged.
He finally looked over as we maneuvered up his driveway. I breathed a sigh of relief at seeing my own car. Mason was here as well, sitting on the railing of Carmine’s porch. He was smoking a cigarette, the smoke was curling in the air.
Never again,my Corsican groaned.
“I don’t think so,” Carmine stepped out of his car after parking.
I followed suit and closed the door. Part of me wanted to drop to my feet and kiss the ground. There had been a possibility of never seeing sweet, solid earth ever again.
“Nothing, I promise!”
Jogging up the steps behind Carmine, I saw Mason pulling on his cigarette long and hard.
“I thought you quit?” It was more of a question than a statement.
Mason snapped, “I did!”
Carmine and I looked at each other before we all followed inside the already open door. Something was clearly bothering him and once he started spilling his guts, he had us wincing.
Carmine tossed his keys down onto the countertop before reaching into the stainless steel refrigerator. “So, let me get this straight….Nora missed her period.”
Mason rubbed at his neck, and I could tell he was itching for more nicotine. “Yes.”
I grinned. “You called us from the bar because of this?”
He slammed his hand down on the table. “I’m not ready to be a fucking father. Not until I kill Augustus.”
“Wow…” Carmine slid us both cold beers. “So, you been shooting up this woman’s club and not using protection?”
Mason groaned. “Shut the fuck up before I whoop your ass.”
Carmine smiled that crazy smile. He loved to fight more than he loved to fuck. My Corsican yawned at the two of them sizing each other up. Carmine began to bounce on his toes. The last thing I wanted to do was spar. My thoughts turned back to Rain. She was never far from my mind, and I hated it. Tonight, I’d gotten so close to her. I could still taste her pussy on my lips.
Spy on her,my Corsican whispered to me.
That’s intrusive,I whispered back.
