“Guys, there’s something going on with Emerson.” Sidney brought up a grainy video from his button cam on the screen above. “It just went live again. The sound isn’t clear and I can’t tell where he’s at.”
The room grew quiet. Everyone’s attention was fixed on the screen.
“So, you really are a traitor,” an unidentified man said. All the camera picked up was the man’s shirt.
“No, of course not. I don’t know what you’re talking about. I’m one of you,” Emerson insisted.
“This!” The man jerked the button free. Blackness covered the screen.
“Oh no,” Sidney exclaimed. “They’ve found the button camera. They know he’s betrayed them.”
Gunshots resounded through the microphone followed by screams that Ben recognized was Emerson’s.
All Ben could do was stare at the screen. Legion had executed Nolan Emerson for his betrayal. Ben’s heart went out to the man who had tried so hard to right the wrongs he’d done.
Static screeched over the microphone followed by nothing. The room sat in stunned silence.
Nearby, the door opened, and Jen came inside. Ben rose and went over to her.
“What’s wrong?” she asked, immediately sensing his distress.
Ben told her the horrific news.
She clasped her hand over her mouth while tears filled her eyes. “I can’t believe it. They just executed him?”
He gathered her close, seeking comfort in her arms. The brutality of Legion still got to him, but it served as a reminder that Strike Team couldn’t let up until every member of the Legion was brought to justice.
A bad feeling warned him this mountain sanctuary was only temporary. The bit of reprieve they had from Legion would soon come to an end. Would any of them be ready for what lay ahead?
???
Jen couldn’t help but feel time had become a valued commodity that was quickly disappearing. Legion had executed a man in cold blood. They wouldn’t hesitate to do the same with the president and the person with him. Finding them was imperative.
Ben tugged her closer. “Abby and Brookes are capable. If anyone can get the president out of there, it’s them.”
“Those men are ruthless. All of this just to gain control of the world?” Jen couldn’t imagine the mindset of someone wanting to control others to the degree of taking lives to accomplish it.
“As far as we can tell, that’s it.”
She wondered about Legion’s allegiance to the powers of darkness.
“I’ve thought that as well,” Ben said, sensing the direction her thoughts were heading.
“He is the ruler of this world for now.”
“He is, but God is ultimately in control.” Ben smiled at her.
“Let’s pray. We need to lift up our people who are in harm’s way. Ask for their protection against the dark forces they’ll be facing.”
“You’re right, we do. Everyone let’s flood heaven with our prayers,” Ben said.
Soon, the silence of the room was replaced with prayers being brought before God. Jen squeezed her eyes shut and poured out her heart. They needed His miracle to bring their teammates and the president home safely.
She understood all too clearly the depth of evil that was woven into the ranks of Legion. They’d blatantly executed Emerson. They would stop at nothing to get what they wanted. Even killing the president of the United States.
Chapter Seventeen
The stillness of the night settled around Ben. It was filled with misgivings and doubts. And he couldn’t help but feel as if time were running out. For the president. For them. Too many lives were at stake. Everyone up here on this mountain was counting on Strike Force to keep them safe. But what if they couldn’t?
