The thought of leaving him was unbearable.

“Jen, please just do it. I can’t lose you.”

She slowly nodded and ran for the trees.

Hiding behind one, she peeked out in time to see the car easing toward the Jeep. Would they ram the vehicle or come out shooting?

The car stopped a couple of yards away. The people had weapons. Before she had time to alert the others, the car’s occupants opened fire.

“Ben!” she yelled over the noise. She was terrified he and the others would be shot.

When the shooting stopped, Ben and his men leapt up and opened fire, forcing the car’s occupants to take cover behind the vehicle. In the process, one man went down. They had a casualty.

Jen had to do something to help her team. If she could stay hidden in the trees and bet past the car, she’d be able to cut the shooters off. Moving further into the woods, she stopped and listened. The shooting continued. She moved closer to the road. The car came into view. Two people were crouched behind it. Another man wasn’t moving. The fourth writhed on the ground and held his leg. The woman and man were probably trying to keep the team pinned down until their backup arrived.

With both shooting at the Jeep, Jen aimed for the man and shot. He dropped to the ground. She’d hit him in the chest. He wasn’t moving. The woman whirled toward Jen and opened fire. Jen jumped behind the tree cover, yet the woman kept shooting.

Jen peeked from behind and shot several rounds at the woman. She hit her in the shoulder. The woman grabbed her arm but kept coming.

“Get down, Jen,” Ben yelled. Jen hit the ground as a round of shots flew past her head.

Yet the woman was relentless.

Jen scrambled behind another tree and tried to be as quiet as possible. The woman was almost on top of her. Jen fired off a few more shots when she reached the end of her clip.

The woman heard the click of an empty chamber and rounded the tree with a gun pointed at Jen’s head.

“You should have stayed hidden,” she said with a smile on her face.

With a baby to protect, Jen needed to live. Her only chance was to charge the woman.

While her brain formed the plan, the woman turned at the faintest sound.

“Drop it.” Ben! Relief flooded Jen and she dropped to her knees.

The woman didn’t listen. She kept her gun on Jen.

“You won’t kill me. If you do, she’ll die. Drop your weapon. Others will be here soon. It’s over, Ben Parker.”

“Ben, don’t do it.”

He slowly lowered his weapon. The woman laughed and aimed straight for Ben. Jen jumped from the hiding spot and hit the woman with her full weight before she could fire off a single round.

Caught off balance she hit the ground. But she still had the gun. She spun toward Jen.

Jen closed her eyes. A shot rang out. The expected pain didn’t come.

When she opened her eyes, Ben knelt beside the woman and checked her pulse.

“She’s dead,” he said.

Jen didn’t hesitate. She ran straight into her husband’s arms.

Chapter Fifteen

“Hurry, Jen. We have to get out of here before others show up.” He grabbed her hand, and together they made a run for the Jeep.

The one living man clutched his leg where he’d been shot and spewed angry words.
