The plane touched down. His heart accelerated. While he waited for Lincoln to taxi to a stop, all he could think about was what he stood to lose.
???
“Anything?” Jen asked, as Ben stared out the window of the plane. She was out of her element and terrified, but she wasn’t about to let her husband go into a dangerous situation without her ever again.
“Nothing. That makes me nervous. Let’s do this quickly.” The hatch door was opened, and they eased the Jeep out.
The landing strip was located behind a group of buildings and out of sight at least. No one would just happen upon the plane by accident.
Once the hatch closed, both Lincoln and Garrett got inside the Jeep.
“Garrett, can you find me the best route back to the mountain?”
“I’m on it.” Garrett went to work on his phone.
Jen’s eyes were glued on the passing countryside as they left the mine.
“There’s a road coming up in a couple of miles. Take it. It will get us close. I’m going to check in and see if James can tell us if there’s any hot spots we need to avoid.”
“Let’s hope.” Ben focused on his driving.
“Do you think they’ll be watching all the roads?” Jen ventured. If so, then the one they were on wouldn’t be safe for long.
He reached over and clasped her hand. “Probably some of them. I’m not sure if they’ll have the manpower to check the smaller ones like this one.”
She sure hoped not.
“You know, you’d make a good spy.” Ben smiled over at her.
He was teasing. Trying to lighten the moment and she appreciated him for it.
“Except I don’t think my heart can handle this adrenaline rush all the time,” she told him.
“Copy that. Thanks, James.” Garrett leaned forward in his seat with a worried look on his face.
“What’s going on?” she asked.
“James said there’s an unusual amount of activity around. He can’t tell for certain if it’s Legion or people trying to get to safer ground. The sooner we get to the turnoff and off this road, the better.”
Jen sucked in a breath and tried to stay calm. Her nerves on edge wouldn’t help Ben or the others.
Ben eased along the road while Jen kept her handgun within reach and watched for the exit. “I see our turnoff coming up…Wait, is that another car heading toward us?”
“It is. We’ll never get to the turnoff before they reach us.” Ben glanced her way. “We don’t know that it’s Legion. Let’s keep to the plan.”
She nodded but her heart hammered against her ears.
The car slowly advanced on them. “It doesn’t appear to be a government vehicle,” Lincoln said.
The car eased past them. A man and woman were in the front. In the backseat, another couple of men. They stared at them as they passed.
Jen blew out a breath and glanced into the rearview mirror. The car was stopping.
“We’ve got trouble,” Garrett warned. “They’re turning around. We can’t get away. We’ll have to stand our ground.”
Ben jerked the vehicle sideways in the road. “They’ll call for backup. Get out this way,” he urged Jen. “Go to those woods over there and stay out of sight.”
