Kelsey’s turn to gasp. “They sent her on vacation with a stranger?”
“I understand there was an interview process and some kind of background check.” Mav wasn’t selling this. “Look, the new guy was definitely an upgrade. He’s a doctor wholives in Sandefjord, no arrest record, and he owns his own home. Good hair, goes to the gym a lot. If I wasn’t straight, I’d date him.”
Rusty raised an eyebrow. “Good hair? You sure you’re straight?”
Sin answered for him. “Oh, he’s definitely straight.”
Five heads swivelled to stare at her. Was it me or did she look slightly flushed?
“What the hell did you do last night?” Ari asked.
“What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.”
“I’m not sure that rule applies when you both live in Vegas.”
Sin clipped the lid onto her travel mug and shrugged. “Pretty sure it’s not an official law, so… I’m going to work.”
Mav jumped up from the stool he’d settled onto. “You need a hand backing your car out the driveway?”
“I think I can fucking manage.”
He slumped back down again. Man, Sin was a real piece of work. She picked up Trooper and glided out into the hallway, serene as always, and disappeared out of Mav’s life. I felt a little sorry for the guy. He looked quite forlorn.
“Wow, I thought she just tied you to the bed and gagged you,” I said.
“She did that too,” Mav mumbled. “I need caffeine and sugar.”
CHAPTER 36
ARI
Alexa called right after breakfast.
“Dusk will be there in a half hour with a lawyer and divorce papers. Make sure Selene’s dressed, okay?”
“Wait, what?”
“Divorce papers. They’re the things you sign when you don’t want to be married to someone anymore.”
“I don’t think Selene’s ready for a court fight with Jace. She doesn’t even have an attorney.”
She just wanted to lie low and cry every half hour. Kelsey and Erin were doing their best to keep her occupied.
“There won’t be any fight. She signs this morning, he signs this afternoon, and she keeps the whole of her trust fund. A nice clean break before she moves away.”
“Why do I get the feeling I’ve missed a step here?”
Granted, I hadn’t yet been married myself, but I was a PI in Vegas. I knew a fair amount about the divorce process. Even a joint decree, the type of divorce that didn’t require a court hearing, needed agreement and a notarised signature from both parties.
“Dusk and Sin are going to walk Jace through the stepsthis afternoon. Which, coincidentally, is also when the FBI will be picking up Jackson.”
“The red room thing?”
“Uh-huh.”
“Did they find out who was behind it?”
“No.” Alexa’s voice cracked, and I could only imagine what she’d seen on that livestream. “The girl was a fifteen-year-old honour student who disappeared from Berkeley, California. We’ve been looking for these people for years.Years.They’re so damn careful, and they always cover their tracks.”
