Sore and bruised, my spirit bruised even further, I find solace in the bathtub, where scalding water cascades from the faucet. The many jets target the most tender spots on my body, theirrelentless pressure loosening the tight knots of pain. A few flickering candles cast a warm glow around me, while Blink-182 plays softly from my phone. With a folded towel cradling my head, I lean back, enveloped in exquisite serenity as the warm water embraces me, melting away the tension.

Even amid the sound of running water and the gentle music, I can hear the laughter of the guys coming from the living room, the bass vibrating against the random items perched on the shelves in the bathroom. They celebrate Ash’s return home, alongside another successful kill. But coursing through my mind is the nagging fact that it wasn’t supposed to happen tonight.

I clench my teeth as I think of Gunnar, still bound in the warehouse, awaiting my return to finish what I started. That was the fucking plan for tonight—a plan that now feels frustratingly incomplete since his name remains unchecked on my list.
