“I’m not sure that fits my goals.” Cynthia snapped her fingers. I cringed at the sound, realizing she was telling someone to do her bidding. I was quite familiar with that. “But I’ll consider it.”
She didn’t even bother to say goodbye. I knew she was gone by the absolute silence from my phone.
I wondered what I’d done in a previous life to deserve this kind of karma because my life was falling apart, and I didn’t know how to fix it.
Chapter Thirteen
BECKETT
Itexted Wren at the end of the school day, hoping to catch her before her after-school club meeting started.
Beckett
I wanted to thank you for my souvenir yesterday.
The bubbles appeared and then disappeared, showing me she was responding. I wanted her to know I was still interested in her proposition. Very interested.
Wren
I can’t believe you just texted that.
Beckett
Would you rather I called to say it?
Wren
OMG, you’re awful {laughing emoji} If you’re good, maybe next time you’ll get another one.
Beckett
I’ll be very good. I think you can attest to that.
Wren
I think I may need a reminder.
Just as I was about to respond, she messaged again.
Wren
I need to run. The Gemstone Club meeting is about to start.
Beckett
Okay. See you later.
Wren
See you.
What happened between us at the Wolfe’s home was easily one of my hottest experiences. Nothing short of Wren saying no could’ve stopped me from learning each delectable curve of her body. Every breath, every whisper, every moan she made was indelibly etched into my memory. It shocked me how badly I wanted her. My veins hummed with awareness when she was near, and my body craved to touch and be touched by only her. For someone who valued control, this scared and excited me.
I paced my office and stared out into the stormy afternoon sky. For a second, I’d been afraid I’d taken things a little too far, but her response let me know she was still on board with it all. Rain dripped down the large window while fierce winds slammed against it, matching the turbulent feelings swirling inside my gut. As much as I desired and wanted Wren, the intensity of my need for her set me on edge.
I programmed the timer on my phone to leave in time for my meeting with Wren and smiled when I swiped to look at our last messages to each other.
“What’s got you grinning, Cheshire Cat?” Grayson asked, and I jumped.
