I hugged her close. “I agree.”
“If anyone had told me over the summer that I’d be here with you and loving every second of it, I would have asked what they were smoking,” she chuckled.
“Same.” I grinned. Back then I could never have imagined Wren and I as friends, nevermind in a loving relationship. “But life has a way of giving us what we need, not what we think we want.” Which got me thinking.
“I love you, Beckett. And I love having you and Zoey in my life.” Wren squeezed me closer in a quick side hug.
“I love you too, Wren.” I knew what I wanted to do for her for Christmas.
With the ride in sight in front of us and Zoey waving madly as it started, I tugged Wren’s shoulders so she’d turn to stand in front of me.
“What are you doing?” She gave me a sultry smile. “Don’t forget we have other people around us. We need to keep this rated G.”
I laughed. “Don’t you worry. I’ll keep it G here as long as you promise me the R-rated version later.”
“Was that ever a question?” she sassed me.
I stood there staring at her, searching for the right words.
“You okay?” Her brow creased and a worried look entered her eyes. “You’re acting weird.”
I swallowed. “I’m great. Perfect in fact.”
She still eyed me warily.
“You mean everything to me. I thought I had a life I loved, but it pales in comparison to how much richer it is with you by my side.”
“Beckett…” she drew out my name and gave me a slightly panicked look. I knew instantly what she thought I was about to do.
“I’m not asking you to marry me.” This was the first step towards that.
Her look of relief was chased away with annoyance.
I kissed the tip of her nose. “Not today anyway.”
Her breath caught, but the happy sparkle was back.
“I don’t want to go another day splitting our time between our homes. I want every second with you I can get. Move in with me and Zoey.”
She glanced at the ride that was slowing down. “I want to say yes, but… Have you asked her yet?”
I loved how Wren’s first instinct was to think of Zo and her feelings.
“No, but if you’d like, we could ask her now.”
Wren nodded.
Zoey ran back to us, tugging Jen behind her. “We want to go on more rides. Can we grab doughboys after that?”
“Mmm, I love doughboys,” Wren said. She cleared her throat nervously.
“You okay?” Zo asked.
“Yup, of course. Never better.” I knew I needed to step in soon, or Wren was going to put Zoey on high alert.
“Kiddo, before you run off to another ride, we have something to ask you.” Suddenly, nerves raced through me. What if she said no? How would I deal with that?
“Sure. What’s up?” She silently regarded me and Wren.
