While they whispered quietly, I gave Alistair my attention. “The two of you might want to lay low until this blows over.”
Alistair held out his hand. “I’ll keep my wife safe. I need to know you’ll do the same for Jess.”
I shook his hand. “I’d give my life for hers.”
He nodded. “I think I might believe you. Don’t disappoint me or the next time I see you won’t be pleasant. For you.”
“Understood, sir.”
Lynette stepped back and looped her arm through Alistair’s “Don’t let him scare you, Alden. Keep our Jess safe and we expect to see you both at our house for Thanksgiving.”
I opened my mouth to let her know that I couldn’t accept. There was no way I’d leave Lexi alone.
“And bring your sister. We’d love to meet her too.” Lynette smiled, before she and Alistair moved off to get in their own car. I should have known they would be aware of Lexi too.
I climbed into the car once I knew Jess was safe inside.
She had the bag clutched to her chest. “I think we should go to Jareth’s.”
I growled at the mention of his name.
Jess laid her hand on my thigh. “I know you hate him. You have every right to, but I think his house might actually be the safest place to go.”
I didn’t necessarily agree, but I had business I wanted to discuss with Jareth and now would probably be the best time to get it done.
Chapter Twenty-Seven
Alden
We arrived at Jareth’spenthouse around dinner time.
Walking inside it reminded me of him. Polished, cold, and uninviting. I couldn’t tell if he’d lived there for a day, a month, or a year. It was like an interior designer came in, chose the most expensive pieces, placed them around the room and left.
Jareth had suggested we sit at the dining room table to go through the documents Jess held in the large canvas bag.
The moment we entered the dining room Jess gave a loud, ‘nope’, and turned back to the living room. “At least you’ve got a sectional in here, Jareth, but your dining room doesn’t even look comfortable. Do you even eat in there?”
