“So we work together.” He sounded doubtful.
“Yes, but I can’t marry you.”
“Because you’ll only marry for love.” He repeated back the words I’d said to him so long ago. It was clear he didn’t believe in the emotion based on the scowl that was permanently etched into his face.
“Exactly.” I waved away his sarcasm. “Okay, so why did my parents have it out for your dad?”
He shook his head. “That’s what I’ve been trying to figure out since I started working with them.”
“You’re fucking rich as Midas. Don’t you have some hacking guru that works for you?”
“Of course I do. He’s good, but wasn’t able to find anything.”
My parents had twenty years to hide what they were doing. “What if my guy takes a look?” Gage was a certifiable genius. I bet he’d know what to do.
“You have a day, two max.”
Was he threatening me? “Then what?”
“Jess, once your parents realize you know they’ve been lying about your inheritance they’re going to hide things even further. You’ll have a vested interest in questioning what they do at thirty percent.”
I’d thought he was the one after me this whole time. Now I had to wonder how far my parents would’ve gone to keep me quiet and if I really trusted Jareth’s narrative of it all.
Either way I needed to get out of here and think.
Chapter Twenty-Four
Alden
I’d just parked mycar a quarter mile from the factory next to Gage’s and was making my way there when a text from him pinged my phone.
Gage: I have Lexi.
Me: Thank God. Is she all right?
Gage: Yes. Shaken but not hurt. We’re hidden in a set of trees by the right side of the factory. I took out one guard patrolling the perimeter. He’s knocked out and tied up in case we need him for questioning.
