Chapter Twenty-Three

Jess

The streets passedby me in a blur as I raced to my destination. I was terrified at what I’d find once I got to Lexi. My legs bounced up and down, and I struggled to find a way to calm myself down. My poor Uber driver had stopped talking to me after I snapped at him about minding his own business.

I jumped when the phone rang with a number I didn’t recognize. My phone trembled in my hand as I tapped the button to answer it.

“Ms. Sulton. So nice to speak to you again.” That same voice from earlier spoke from the other end.

“What do you want? I’m almost there.”

“Excellent.”

How did he stay so calm?

“Don’t you think this is all a little excessive? I mean you could have just asked to meet with me.” I used my sarcasm as a shield.

“Perhaps if you weren’t so hard to find, that could have been arranged.”

“I want you to put Lexi on the phone or I’ll turn the car around.” I was completely bluffing, but they hopefully didn’t know that.

There was a pause before I heard Lexi’s voice. “Jess?”

I let out a breath. “Oh Lex. You’re okay. Thank God.”

“They haven’t hurt me.” She sounded tired.

“Tick tock, Ms. Sulton.” That familiar voice was becoming really annoying.

“I’m moving as quickly as I can here. You’re lucky I have the money to get a private plane that fast.”

“You have twenty minutes on the clock Ms. Sulton. I suggest you use your time wisely.”

This guy was such an asshole. “How will I even know where to find you once I’m inside.”

“You’ll be able to figure it out.” I so badly wanted to kick him in the shins.

“Wait,” I yelled. I could tell he was going to hang up.

“You have your proof.” The deafening silence once again filled my ear.

“The asshole really needs to learn how to say goodbye,” I grumbled. I gripped the phone so tight, the hard plastic bit into my skin. The pain was the one thing keeping me focused.

I didn’t know what this person wanted or even who they were.
