Presley guided him to a parking area behind the apartments where she lived. As soon as he stepped out, he could hear music and laughter. The scent of grilled burgers and steaks mingled with fresh, clean air.
Gia snapped Major’s leash on and led him from the SUV. Then she grabbed Presley’s hand.
“This is for us?”
“It sure is.”
“Why?”
“Because you’re special.”
“We are?”
“Absolutely.”
They had almost arrived at the park when Gia yelled, “Kayne!” She ran over to her buddy. He hugged her while scratching Major’s head. Kayne held up his wrist to show Gia he was still wearing the bracelets they had made together.
“How are you feeling?” Kayne asked when they approached him.
“Good.”
“No issues with the drive?”
“None.”
A group of kids came rushing toward them. Gia took a step back and bumped into Presley.
Presley squeezed her shoulder in reassurance. “Get ready to meet The Prince of COBRA Securities and his loyal court.”
“Hey, Presley. Welcome back.”
“Thanks, Kai. Everyone, this is Gia Bianchi, her father, Dominic, and Major.”
“Hi, Kai,” Gia smiled. “I’ve heard all about you.”
Dominic’s mouth dropped open, and he leaned over to whisper, “Did she just bat her eyelashes at him?”
Presley grinned. “She sure did.”
“I’ve heard about you too, Gia,” Kai returned.
“You have?”
“Yes.” He held out a hand to Dominic. “Nice to meet you, sir.”
“You too, Kai.”
“Mr. Bianchi, do you know why the firefighter rushed out of the burning building holding a calendar?”
He glanced at Presley before saying, “No. Why?”
“Because he wanted to save the day.”
Gia practically threw herself on the ground laughing.
“I do think I’ve been replaced,” Kayne mused.
Dominic felt the same way.
