“No.” It wouldn’t make sense for my father to kill any of his alpha siblings and especially not in his own greenhouse. “You’re not that sloppy.”
His dark chuckle reminded me of my teenage years when he’d trained me within an inch of my life to survive being an alpha in this pack. His philosophy was: if I’d died back then, I would never survive being an adult.
Living as a Lopez wasn’t as easy as my father made it look.
Every alpha in this pack was hungry—starvingfor power. They all wanted to steal my father’s spot, but none of them were strong enough to take it from him, so they tried to find underhanded ways to dethrone him.
A few months ago, he’d officially announced me as his heir and none of my cousins, or aunts and uncles were pleased aboutthat. They also didn’t like that my father had punished one of my cousins for a crime most, if not all, have thought about committing.
My adopted sister, Lucy, had been attacked at a restaurant by one of my alpha cousins. My father had then publicly handed the rights to his life over to her at the quarterly legacy event.
The very same event where he’d announced I would be his heir.
Now the whole situation was complicated as fuck thanks to Lucy, but I couldn’t blame her when I was the one who’d made the choice to leave the pack back when she did.
Everyone always assumed I wanted her to be my omega thanks to how close we were. Our codependency has always been borderline unhealthy, but no one else has been able to deal with us in the way that we needed.
I was a fake alpha and was a ‘defective’ omega.
Or at least, she had been, until she’d found her real alphas.
No matter what anyone else thought, I was happy for her. She was my family. My little sister. Not someone I want to bond and marry one day.
Honestly, I was relieved there was an alpha—twoalphas, who’d caught her fancy. I’ve been so worried she’d be isolated for the rest of her life with only me to take the edge off of her instincts when I could barely even manage.
If I were a real alpha, I would have been able to do more for her.
Regardless, the alphas she chose were part of another legacy pack.
Staying in the shadows was no longer something we could do.
So, I gave in.
I agreed to come back to the Lopez pack when Lucy had finally agreed to let my father officially adopt her. Theconsequences of that was this—this disgusting struggle for power I’ve been trying to avoid all my life.
“You’re the detective,” my father reminded me, cutting into my thoughts. “What do you think happened?”
I glanced over at him and the small smile on his face paired with the dark glint in his red eyes sent a chill down my spine. “Someone is trying to make it look like you’re losing control.”
His smile widened and he pushed his chair back, the iron scraping through the blood with a grating sound. “You know, I used to be disappointed you never wanted to be a lawyer when we both know you would have excelled at it.”
I looked back down at the body and took in all the details I could before my father asked me a question I couldn’t answer.
“You’ve always been a genius, Francesca.” He set a hand on my shoulder. It was warm and comforting even if it was heavy. “You would have been good at anything you set your mind to, but your skill at reading others could have made you into the hottest lawyer in the country.”
“I don’t like people enough for that.”
My father chuckled and slipped his hands in his pockets, dropping his gaze to the body of his brother.
We stared at it in silence for a few moments, our brains churning to find the answers and solutions we would need for what came next.
I may not have gotten the red eyes, but my father has trained me to replace him from day one. It had never mattered to him that I still had blue eyes. He only cared about my skills and that was something I’ve never disappointed him with.
He’s trained me to be just like him, whether I was an alpha, or not. And honestly? It was the only thing I was good at.
Francesco Lopez was a vicious monster hiding behind the mask of a gentleman and I was his devoted daughter – made in his image.
But my mask was even more flawless than his, hiding just how cruel I could be.
