I stare in horror as Iree quickens behind the wheel and speeds off. Oh my god. I’ll never forgive myself for stressing Mama G.
Kross might never forgive me, either.
I pace the waiting room while praying. Hopefully, it isn’t anything serious. I’ve had nurses regard me with concern and ask if I need a doctor, so I’m sure my appearance is disheveled.
“Davi?” Kross calls out.
I turn while wringing my hands, nervous to reveal what I caused. I heard Cairo on the phone with him minutes ago. Since he’s been downstairs with his mom, it takes him no time to reach.
He holds my hand and glances down the corridor briefly. “Cai and Iree with Mama G?”
“Yeah.”
He crumples his brows while studying my appearance, then touches my sore cheek. “Baby… what happened to you?”
“Check on Mama G first,” I urge. “I’m okay.”
He swallows hard and nods. “I’ll go see about her and come talk to you.”
“Okay.”
He lets go of my hand and strides off. I sit on a chair, legs shaking anxiously.
Iree appears in the hallway, face tight as she approaches me. “Didn’t I tell you to get out of here?”
I stand. “How’s Mama G? Is it her heart? Is she all right?”
“No, she isn’t, and you’re no longer welcome around her. So leave. I doubt Kross will want to see you once he hears you caused this.”
“It’s not all on me. He’ll see my perspective once I explain that you stole my designs and sent them to the competitor.”
She folds her arms. “There’s nothing to see because it wasn’t me. Just get the hell on, Davia. I’ll repay the money you spent for me to be in Paris and return the clothes.”
“You think that will fix what you did to me?”
“Whatever. Believe what you want. Just leave.” She signals a security guard as he’s walking past.
“Fine,” I huff. “I’m leaving. Sorry about your gran. But this isn’t over.” I storm off to the elevators and push the button.
As one opens, Shanae exits with a scowl. “Davia?” Her eyes taper to curious slits. “Wait a sec. Why are you here at the same time that Kross Krueger is here? Are y’all screwing behind Jamir’s back?”
“Bitch, mind your damn business. Jamir and I broke up. So there. You finally got what you want.”
“Excuse me?” She snickers. “You think I want your arrogant man?”
“Oh, please. I see you eyeing him every time I bring him to dinner.”
“Whatever, Davia.” She softens her expression as she studies my face. “Why are you here? You hurt?”
“It’s nothing, Shanae. Don’t worry about it.”
She shrugs. “Fine. Anyway, you should know, Aunt Tanya—”
“Just stop!” I push the button for the elevator and hop on the second it opens, ready for the day to be over.
FORTY-SIX
“Fighting?” Cairo and I blurt in surprise after Mama G tells us what happened.
