He throws me a glare in return. “I’m the newassistant.”
“Great.” I huff an annoyed breath. “You seriouslycouldn’t find something else? Or maybe you took the spot to piss me off.”
He smirks. “It’s funny how insecure you are eventhough you got Jordyn.”
“So it is to piss me off,” I decide. “Jordyn’smine. Move on.”
An arrogant look covers his face, and he tilts hischin upward. “It’s all good. You’ll mess up eventually, and I’ll be there tocomfort her.”
“You—”
Dante stops me before I charge him.
Aaron chuckles and shakes his head as he walksaway, joining Coach and our trainer at the sideline.
“Relax, man. He’s goading you.”
“Yeah, he is. No way I’ll let Jordyn continuebeing friendly with that prick.” A thought hits me. Is that what she waswarning me about earlier?
Aaron keeps his distance throughout practice, firing invisible lasers at me whenever we cross paths.
Whatever. I have more important things. I can’tlet him get to me.
At the end of practice, we all plunge to thegrass.
Everyone’s exhausted.
We’re pushing hard to prepare for Saturday’squalifier. Alston College is tough, and we have a score to settle after theyknocked us out of the second round last year.
“Word is reps will be at the next couple ofmatches,” Dante rasps through his punctuated breathing. “This is your shot, man. There might be someone from the Revs.”
“I doubt it.”
He scoffs. “Quit acting like you’re not thestandout on this team. If they set their sights on anyone, it’ll be you. They’ve probably already watched your highlights.”
That reminds me.
I sit up to massage the back of my legs. “Thoseclips aren’t the best. I need a non-biased person to film one.”
Tired laughter bursts out of Dante. “You mean youwant someone who won’t spend most of the time screaming while recording youtaking off your shirt?”
“Fuck off,” I grunt.
He sits up. “My cousin Vicky is a film major. I’lltext her and see if she can record you.”
“Cool.”
“What are you up to later?” he asks while textinghis cousin.
“Jordyn,” is all I say.
He snorts. “I figured.”
We retrieve our gym bags and towels.
Aaron and I make eye contact while he’s collectingthe soccer balls. I throw him another warning look before leaving the field.
I arrive atFine Eatsclose to nineo’clock, park along the sidewalk, and get out.
