Chapter Eighteen-Hope

Miles was quiet on the ride home. He looked pensive. Thoughtful. So, I remained silent to give him the space I thought he needed.

I worried my lower lip between my teeth and turned the volume on low, filling the car with the crooning voice of George Michael. I was an 80s music girl at heart. Always would be.

I shifted the car into park, smiling when he jumped out of the thing before I could turn the ignition off.

It surprised me when Miles made no move to take the keys from me at the shop, and I appreciated it. I mean, I loved cars. Loved to drive.

He opened my door, offering me his hand, and I took it wholeheartedly. His lips quirked when I slid out of the seat and my dress rode up my leg.

I wondered if he was remembering what we did that morning on the kitchen table in this very dress. I reached up on tiptoe and kissed his lips.

“What was that for?” he asked.

“Just because,” I replied.

His eyes flashed, and I smiled. Miles was so damn handsome, it was difficult to hold his gaze. But I managed. Barely.

Maybe it was because of the love I saw shining in his bright blue irises.

“It gets so quiet in the evenings,” he rumbled, and I hummed in agreement.

“Hungry?” I asked.

“I’m a Shifter. I’m always hungry, but, uh, I was wondering. Do you want to meet him?”

“Bear?”

“Yeah,” he said, grinning at me.

That was probably because I was clapping my hands and bouncing up and down on my toes like a preschooler.

“Yes, yep, please!” I said nodding like a lunatic.

“Alright, come on.”

I followed Miles around to the back of the house, trying not to lose my footing when he whipped his shirt over his head and began unfastening his pants.

“What are you doing?” I asked, scandalized and checking to make sure none of the neighbors were outside.

“No one’s out, Pretty Girl. I could hear them, or smell them, if they were,” he assured me. “And I have to get undressed before I shift, or my clothes will tear.”

“Right. Makes sense,” I said.

“Hey, don’t go staring at my dick, Hope, or I’ll have something else in mind besides showing you bear,” he teased, but I couldn’t help it. The second his pants dropped, my eyes were focused on every last inch of his semi-hard length.

“Fuck,” Miles growled, and closed the space between us, grabbing me by the back of my neck and slamming his mouth to mine.

I didn’t know what, if anything was wrong with me, but I was so damn turned on by this man. I couldn’t be near him and not want to touch him.

“Alright. I’m gonna show you Bear, then we’ll finish this,” he said, kissing me one more time before stepping back. “Don’t be afraid. I won’t hurt you.”

I swallowed down my nerves and licked my lips, tasting Miles on them as I watched him step a few feet away from me. The air surrounding him seemed to shimmer and swirl.

I recalled the cracking sounds of the men from last night, their hard shifts had echoed in the garage. But Miles was different. His transformation from man to Bear was smoother, somehow. Softer.

One minute, I was staring at this big, beautiful man who’d completely stolen my heart. The next, a half a ton Grizzly Bear was standing before me.
