“Sabrina!”I shoot out telepathically.“Get out now, but quietly. You’ll have to follow Savage, Xander and me out.”
Savage halts mid-step. “Who are you talking to?”
Xander stops too.
Alarmed, I turn to look at him. “You could hear that?” But I’m now able to see the handle of Titus’ door rotating slowly.
“I can tell when you’re talking to someone using TP.” Savage’s eyes narrow in suspicion.
I put a sly smile on my mouth and begin walking backwards, putting my hands behind my back so my boobs are pushed out. I have to make sure I talk loudly to distract Xander’s insane hearing. “Wouldn’t you like to know? And also, youdoknow some of the alphabet. I’ve never heard it called ‘TP’ before, is it a wolf thing?”
“Yeah, it is. But who is it?” Savage demands, but he prowls after me as I walk backwards down the corridor, Xander following us. Two predators stalking a gazelle. Sabrina slips out of Titus’ room, a silver laptop in hand. Her red nimpin, Cherry, bobs up and down in fear on her shoulder. I cloak them both in an invisible shield again.
“It’s my secret,” I say loudly, continuing to walk backwards. “You can have secrets and so can I.”
“I don’t have any secrets from you,” Savage growls. “Tell me which of these beasts you’re talking to. You should be talking tome.”
Xander’s glowing eyes flare and that red-orange glow returns.
“What?” I demand. We’ve reached the stairs and now I have no idea how I’m going to walk backwards down them.
Xander comes up behind Savage to stare down at me. “I’m thinking I don’t trust a fanged, fucking thing you say, snake girl.”
Savage rolls his eyes and, to my satisfaction, Xander headsupthe stairs instead of down.
“Are you going up too?” I ask my wolf.
Savage yanks me against him once again. “Come with me, so I get my answers from you in more creative ways.”
My laugh is genuine at the unrestricted promise in those words. “Maybe later. I need to find Min.”
He steps away from me, heading up the stairs, though there’s a firm frown on his face.
“She’s in the dining hall. You should have just asked Raquel with your TP.”
I feel bad, but I have to do this for Minnie.
“Yeah, I’ll go there now. Thank you.”
“You’ll come to me tonight?”
I smile again. “Yes.”
Once he’s disappeared up the stairs with that grin on his face, I plod back down, my heart in my throat as I tell Sabrina it’s now safe to come down after me.
When she’s in my sight—holding up the laptop and shaking it like it’s the grand final trophy, I surround us both with my invisibility shield, and breathless, we make our way down the stairs.
“I can’t believe we fucking did it,” Sabrina hisses in my ear as we reach the foyer of the animus dorm and the doors to our freedom.
We make it out into the fresh air of the great outdoors, and Sabrina shakes my arm with excitement. We hurry back to the anima dorm and I give Stacey the heads up that we’ll be ready for her in mere minutes.
Giddy, I guide Sabrina back towards the alleyway we used the first time and take off the invisibility.
“We’re on our way,”Raquel replies into my head.
“Alright, we’ve got to be quick if we’re gonna get this back soon,” I say. But Sabrina grabs my arm, her eyes stricken in horror at something over my shoulder. I whirl around, heartpounding, to see a figure standing in the mouth of the alleyway, shadowed in darkness like something from a nightmare.
On instinct, my eagle eyes zoom in to see his face.
