I slip my hand into Roman’s. “Was it worth it?” I murmur, out of hearing of the others. “Everything we endured to save this?”

He kisses the top of my head. “I think so,” he says, his eyes caressing my face. “You?”

I nod, resting my head on his shoulder. “I know so.”

After a time, we turn to leave. Masha reluctantly climbs off Golden Wind, kissing her new friend goodbye when Papa says she can’t bring him upstairs with her. She stops at another doll, the one with a missing eye and crooked arm.

“Deda,” she says, turning wide blue eyes up to Papa, “tell me about this one.”

Papa bends down and scoops her up in his arms so she is looking directly into his eyes.
