I nod. “It’s a good idea.”

Driving slowly, I pull into the garage and shut the door behind me after I turn off the engine.

My mind keeps oscillating between doubt and excitement. But it’s too late to turn back now.

Opening my door, I let Ben out of the truck.

He follows me to the door that leads into the house.

“Okay, you stay here,” I tell him.

Ben stares back at me.

I nod. Then head inside.

Courtney is standing near the stove, oven mitts on her hands. “Hey.”

“Hello.” Something in my tone clearly gives me away.

She turns to face me, head tilting to the side, eyes narrowing. “What’s going on?”

Her suspicion is adorable. “Nothing bad. I promise.”

“But something.”

I rock back on my heels. Wondering again if I did the right thing. But knowing if she’d been with me, the outcome would’ve been the same.

“I got… something.” I can’t quite get myself to say it.

“And that something is…?” She lifts a brow as she puts her mitt-covered hands on her hips.

I think about how to start but decide it’s easier to show her.

I grip the handle for the door leading to the garage, and I open it.

Chapter 184

Courtney

I watch Sterling, wondering what he could possibly be surprising me with this time.

He already bought me all the winter clothes I could possibly need.

All of my things are already inside his house.

Everything I could…

My breath catches.

And my muscles freeze.

Because…

Because…

Tears flood my eyes.

I feel stupid for crying, but I don’t care.
