The extra layer is warm, but that’s just a bonus. I could wear any of my other shirts, but the flannel makes me feel close to him.

Makes me feel like he’s with me.

My boots crunch over the gravel, and I tip my head back as I walk, looking up at the stars.

The moon is a sliver tonight. Beautiful and picturesque. But leaving the world dark.

I look back down at the path in front of me.

I forgot my flashlight in the cabin. And I know I should probably worry about running into Lady Bear, or some other forest-dwelling creature, but I’m more focused on being proud of myself.

My first day here, I couldn’t fathom walking all this way in the dark.

Now it feels like… home.

Home.

What an idea.

I know I’ve used the word before, thinking about this place, my cabin. But it feels… bigger now.

Home feels like more than just where I’m sleeping.

If I wasn’t buzzed, the thought might choke me up. But—I smile in the night—I am buzzed.

And I’m certain Sterling is going to come to me tonight.

And I don’t care how sore I amdown there. I’ll welcome him with open legs.

Chapter 139

Sterling

Red dots my vision.

Courtney is crossing the driveway.

And the man is following her.

My hands open and close at my sides.

He. Is. Following. Her.

I keep my footsteps silent as I trail a few paces away.

This is my land. My property. I know how to move through it without making a noise.

And the fact this guy is doing the same… I doubt this is his first time following a woman.

I want to call out to Courtney.

Want to warn her.

But I also don’t want to frighten her.

And I want to make sure my rage is correctly placed.

I’ll give this man the distance between here and the Laundry Cabin to change his mind.
