Sterling pulls the door shut, and while I stand stunned by the whole interaction, the deadbolt whirs closed behind me.
He’s impossible.
A soft feeling wraps around my heart.
He’s so impossible.
I don’t know if I can accept all of this, but for tonight… I will.
And I’ll search for those cookies.
Chapter 110
Sterling
If someone askedme if I was avoiding Courtney, I would say no.
And I would be lying.
After last night’s meatloaf, she did as she was told and stayed in her cabin.
I know because I watched.
And today, I told her to clean the women’s restroom while her new baseboard heater was being installed.
Which is a legitimate task, even if I did peek in earlier to confirm the place was already squeaky clean. I also spotted her little cactus in there, so I figured it must be a place Courtney likes.
Liking a bathroom sounds weird on the surface, but it’s a whole building just for her. So it makes sense as a refuge of sorts.
And if I sat in her cabin the whole time the electrician was in there, so what? I wasn’t about to leave him alone to rummage through her things.
And if after the electrician left, I went into her bedroom and swapped the pair of underwear I took days ago for a pair of new, slightly used panties…
Well, I never claimed to be a well-adjusted man.
My fingers twist in the soft fabric still stuffed into my pocket as I stand in my bedroom.
Courtney’s lights are still on, but I’m sure she’ll be going to bed soon.
I want to be in there with her.
Want to climb into her bed and twist my body around hers. Again.
But she needs to rest. And now that she has a properly heated cabin, I’m sure she’ll sleep better without me pawing at her.
So I’m keeping my distance.
At night, so she can get back to one hundred percent. And during the day, so she can’t argue with me about all the new items in her cabin.
It’s the right call.
I’m sure of it.
But tomorrow, I’m heading out for a few nights with Fisher’s group, and I don’t think I can go that long without seeing her.
