“I mean, gooey. Like her brain was leaking out of her ears.”
“Oh, that kind.” Lia grinned, thinking of all the times she’d seen that exact same gorgeous smile on her wife’s face. Goofy, gooey, totally in love. “Gotcha.”
“I hope Janet understands what she’s doing with her.”
“Oh, I think she does, darling. Absolutely.”
Quinn finally emerged from her cloud of temper enough to look at her and frown.
“You seem very sure. How come?”
“I’m not too sure of anything but I bumped into Janet at the gym the other day. We chatted for a while and she told me about Ellie.”
“What did she say exactly?”
“That they keep bumping into each other out of the blue.”
“Huh.”
“Yeah.” Lia smiled again at Quinn’s suspicious expression. “Quite serendipitous. She said they had dinner and exchanged a few kisses.”
“A few, eh?”
“Yep. She said it felt very different with Ellie.”
“Meaning they didn’t go straight to bed afterwards?”
“Something like that, yes. Janet was worried about having pushed too much, too soon, when she asked if Ellie would like to see her again. Apparently, Ellie was a bit hesitant to answer.”
Quinn stared, now looking properly stunned.
“Wow. Janet? Worried? She doesn’t usually care about stuff like that.”
“I think she does now. Genuinely.”
“Well. I had zero idea all this stuff was going on.”
“Sorry, I forgot to tell you I’d spoken to Jan. But we’ve both been busy, uh.”
“That’s true.” Quinn’s intense gaze softened. “Maybe when we’ve caught this killer, and you’re in a good place with your own work, we could take a weekend off. Go on a little road trip, catch up with each other. What do you think?”
Lia kissed her soundly on the mouth.
“I think that’s a wonderful idea. Thank you, darling.”
“No thanks required.” Quinn pulled her in her arms as she dropped onto the couch. “I love you, Lia. Taking time off used to be an irritating thing for me in the past, but not anymore if I get to spend it with you.”
“Same here.” Lia smiled at the memory of previous trips, including their honeymoon in Mexico. “Nothing I like more than being on the road with you.”
“We’ll throw the sleeping bags in the car. Head south if you like, go find warmer weather.”
“Perfect!”
Lia kept on smiling. For a while, she was silent too as she allowed herself to enjoy the embrace and the familiar warmth of Quinn’s body. She had never imagined it could be so easy, but being married to Quinn kept on getting better and better. The joy of their union was not fading, even after almost two full years together. If anything, the connection was growing deeper and stronger every day, along with understanding and appreciation. Lia nestled against her shoulder, closed her eyes, and let out a contented sigh. This, right here, was bliss. Then, Quinn grunted, destroying the vibe.
“Janet is way older, you know?”
“Come on, babe!” Lia laughed.
