"Fuck, what the hell are you saying, man? You think we've got more than one player trying to get our attention?" Spike asks, and the rest of the guys stare at me with very little hope in their eyes.
"I'm saying I'm not going to rule it out as a possibility. If it's still Marc, we've already got his number, and it's only a matter of time until we flush that asshole out. Until then, we all know what we're supposed to be doing. Let's get on it. Doc, you need to findout that information like yesterday." I snap and grab Nisa to pull her back into my room.
"What are you doing, we need to get on the road right now." She says, clearly pissed off that I'm not running for my bike right now.
I know how little time we might have in this situation, but I can't let her go outside without as much protection as possible.
"We're on the way, Nisa. I promise you. I just need you to have this first." I tell her and pull out a tiny snub-nosed pistol. It's about the size of my palm and the bullets probably won't do much damage, but it'll slow Marc down if he does try to grab her again. I stuff it in the small of her back, making sure the safety is on before I grab a small knife and put it in her shoe.
"If for whatever reason we get separated, and you get cornered or one of Marc's goons tries to take you, don't fucking hesitate. You take those bastards down. Do you understand me? These weapons are small enough that they should pass by inspection without most people noticing them." I stare at her for a second and when she doesn't respond to me, I grab hold of her shoulders and I shake her once to get her brain into gear. "Nisa, don't fuck around If he's really trying to draw you out, I need you to make sure you're doing everything in your power to get out of there safe. Your insides are all bruised up. You're not going to be able to take another beating like that, and I'm not going to be able to sit back and lose you again. I'll burn the world down to find you the next time, and that means a lot of us are going to end up dead. Do what I'm fucking asking you."
"I got it, Leo. I'll be safe." She says, and the words set me at ease, if only for a little while.
"Prez, I got the info. No one else in the area." Doc calls through the door.
"All right, let's move."
I pull out a heavy sweater for Nisa and my leather kutte for myself. It's time to get this show on the road.
Half of us ride over to the hospital where Ms. Maddy is being held. The minute we walk in and Nisa sees her mother, she breaks down.
Not only did she get a massive amount of smoke inhalation, but she was burned badly in the process. One half of her face would be scarred, and the doctors tell us that there's a strong possibility that they're going to have to amputate Ms. Maddy's arm from below the elbow. The tissue damage is just too severe.
I do my best to focus on my woman, making sure that she has everything she needs, and doing everything that I can to support her, but in the back of my mind I'm feeling more and more uneasy about this.
It was too sloppy, too quick, and this Marc asshole hasn't taken ownership of it. If this were really something that Marc was responsible for, I'm sure he would've found a way to get to Nisa already and let her know that this was because of him.
I didn't want to jinx my club, but my gut is telling me this is much more than just one person coming after us.
This attack is a statement from someone else. I just had to find out who.
CHAPTER 20
OH, MOTHER...OH, BROTHER
Nisa
Every time I turn around, it seems like someone else around me is in danger. First it was my brother, then the guys at Chrome Creed and now my mother.
I wish Marc would just take his anger out on the person he really wants to punish... me.
I hop off Leo’s bike before he even gets it to a complete stop. The muffler burns my leg, I’m moving so fast.
“Nisa, hold up.” He calls out for me, but I can’t wait for him. My mother was already in bad shape with the first fire, and now she’s been in another. How much can the woman take before it’s too much.
Leo and I rush up to the ICU where they have my mother and I see one of the same nurses that was there when I was in the hospital.
“Oh, I didn’t think we’d be seeing you any time soon? How’s the head?” She asks, giving me a patient smile.
“It’s fine. I’m sorry I just left like that, but there were extenuating circumstances. I’m actually here about my mom. She was in a fire.” I tell the nurse and instantly her face drops. I won’t survive if she tells me my mother is gone. I just won’t.
“Come on, she’s over here.” The nurse leads us down the hall and when I look back, I notice that no one other than Leo is walking beside me. They must be downstairs making sure things are safe. Or they could be giving me some space to grieve.
The nurse stops us right before she opens the door to one of the patient rooms. On the small label, I see my mother’s name, so I know she’s in there.
“Sweetheart, I need you to brace yourself. Your mother has been through a lot, okay. She’s resting right now, but what you’re going to see is... well, it’s going to be tough.” The kind nurse says to me, and I feel Leo’s arms wrap around my waist.
“Okay. I’m ready. I’m ready.” The words come out my mouth, but even as I say them, I know I’m not. Nothing could prepare me for what I’m about to see.
