Swimming in the ocean without a flotation device.
She was not ready.
Salem kissed the side of her neck before lifting her off him and placing her in bed. He tucked the covers around her and turned off the television.
Tamsyn knew she should take off her sweatshirt, she was going to roast. But she couldn’t bring herself to move.
Plus, she liked wearing a piece of each of them.
“Roman will put you to bed, all right,” Salem murmured. “Be a good girl and go right off to sleep. Do you need anything?”
“She probably wants some water,” Alexei said. “I’ll go get her some.”
“What about a nightlight?” Salem asked. “You could leave the light on in the bathroom and just adjust the door.”
“I don’t need a nightlight,” she reassured him.
Such an idea was laughable.
If she’d ever needed one, she’d had it trained out of her to want it.
“Are you sure?” Roman asked. “You’re in a new place. When I’m somewhere new, I often wake up disoriented.”
“I’ll be all right.”
She was used to waking up in strange places. This certainly wasn’t the worst place she’d ever slept. Alexei returned with a water bottle which he placed on the bedside table.
“I’m two doors along if you need me,” Salem told her as though she didn’t know exactly where his bedroom was. “Don’t worry about waking me up.”
Alexei brushed her hair back off her face. “The braids are cute.” Then he kissed her on the lips. When he drew back, her heart was racing and she didn’t feel nearly as tired as she did before.
He smirked down at her as though he knew exactly the effect he was having on her. And, in all likelihood, he did.
The rat.
When they were both gone, Roman stared down at her.
“Um. Hi,” she said, feeling awkward.
Hi?
Was that really the best she could do?
“Hi,” he replied, sounding just as awkward. “Is it all right for me to be here or would you rather be alone?”
“I really don’t want to be alone. I don’t think I could sleep.”
It was the truth. She never slept well. But she’d gone from feeling sleepy just twenty minutes ago to being wide awake.
“All right.” He settled down next to her. “Is this all right?”
Okay, she needed to do something to make him feel more at ease.
“Rome?”
“Yeah?”
“I like you.”
