“Mind telling me what that was about?” His sharp eyes seemed to take in every feature on her face and body. She couldn't tell what he was thinking.
She shifted uncomfortably under his scrutiny and shrugged a little. “I… I’m not sure. I guess I was just a little light…”
“Don’t bother giving me that bullshit story,” he cut her off. “Might’ve flown with Le Croix because he wasn’t here to see what happened, but I saw your face. You were terrified when I came inside your place and touched you. Now if I’m going to protect you then I need to know what’s going on.”
Veronica studied him for a moment, taking in his implacable features. The way he held himself and the look in his eyes. He was so like Jay. She recognized this type of man. She would trust him to protect her because she trusted Jay. But she wasn’t going to tell this stranger her secrets. She lifted her chin and gave him a hard look of her own.
“Actually, you don't need to know anything,” she told him coolly, forcing her dark eyes to meet his hazel eyes head on. “You're here to protect my body and my property. You don't need to know me personally to do that. I would prefer you or whomever you assign to my detail to keep their distance. Just explain the drill to me and I’ll do my best to accommodate you.”
His body stiffened and he raised an eyebrow at her little show of bravado. She thought she might have angered him and she held her breath waiting to see what kind of retaliation he might come up with. Instead a slow, sexy smile separated his full lips giving her a glimpse of straight, white teeth. He leaned forward, crouching over her just enough to make her heart beat faster in trepidation.
“That’s exactly what I like to hear, Ms. Klassen. You better believe you’ll accommodate me in every way I can think of to protect that little body,” his voice grew impossibly deeper as his eyes bore into hers. “Only I’ll be making it my mission to find out everything I can about you personally. It’s been a long time since a woman has basically told me to fuck off to my face and I find I'd like to accept your challenge.”
