Of course, Con would be calling back soon. They needed to get behind closed doors for that conversation.

In minutes, they had a room rented and located it on the top floor. When AJ opened the door, May started inside.

He stepped into her path. “Wait. Let me take a look around first.”

She blinked up at him and nodded. Dear god, that protective streak in him was hot as hell.

He dropped the bags unceremoniously on the floor and reached behind his back, laying his hand on the weapon he carried in his waistband. She watched him stalk through the small room, switching on lights and checking under the beds and behind the shower curtain.

When he was finished, he came to a stop in front of her.

“Close the door, May.” His voice dipped to a low rumble, and his eyes hooded. Under the lids, the vivid blue sparked with the same lust she’d seen after their kiss.

She reached behind her and shut the door.

“Lock it.”

A shiver of desire rolled down her spine as she did something she never in a million years thought she’d do—she obeyed his command.

“Now…” He took a step closer and closed his hands around her waist. “Let’s finish what we started in the car.”

EIGHT

There were only two sounds in the hotel room: the soft whir of the hotel’s air conditioning…and the stuttering hitch of May’s breath as Henner lowered his mouth to hers.

For miles in the car, tension had dogged them. Nothing about the op had changed. Hell, there wasn’t even a plan at the moment. But any tension between him and May flowed away as their mouths connected.

Heat whipped at his insides and he gently probed the seam of her mouth with his tongue, seeking entrance.

With a soft gasp, she parted for him. He swept inside, tasting, seeking…taking.

A hypnotic wave of lust struck him. He tightened his grip on her waist—god, she was so small compared to him—and drew her flush against his body.

A soft mewl of want escaped her and she slid her arms around his neck. He felt her tremble of desire. As if she couldn’t live with giving in to it, she pushed away from him.

Breathing hard, she twisted her head aside. “This is a bad idea, AJ.”

“Probably. But all the fun things in life are bad ideas.”

Reluctantly, she shot him a look.

Before she could turn away from him again, he hooked a knuckle beneath her jaw and forced her chin up.

“What good will come of us sleeping together?”

“I plan on doing more than sleeping.”

He saw how his words affected her. He’d forgotten how women worked and that hearing sweet words, confessions ofdesire and even dirty talk, undid them more than his skilled hands could.

Her throat worked in a delicate swallow.

He slipped his hand upward to cup her cheek. She covered it with her own, her slender fingers arousing the hell out of him even though she wasn’t touching any body parts he’d ever considered a turn-on before.

“We won’t do anything you don’t want to do.”

Though she seemed to struggle with herself, she met his gaze. In that minute, she threw open the door to her soul.

Fuck. He fell right in. The black depths burned with want, and he saw so much more.
