As I reach for my badge, happier than I could have imagined to see it, he keeps his fingers on the metal. “I know you think I did you wrong, but I hope you can be open-minded. Agent Liam’s had spectacular results on his last year of cases and he’s good energy for the team.”

Sure more favoritism, but I can handle it. The world is unjust but at least we have a little more income with Kye in the house.

Minstrom catches my eye. “I know that haze lead was yours. I have something else in mind for your competence, but it requires patience. You punching agent Liam was the first time I ever doubtedyou might have it, but now I’m going to chalk it up to the scent match fever. Understood?”

“Yes, sir. I’m willing and able to serve the OCB.”

“Good man. Dismissed.”

I bow and walk to the door.

“Oh wait,” he calls. “Are you taking omega leave?”

I shake my head. “Not for a few weeks. She comes with a lot of checks and balances.” Not to mention two feral alphas.

He grunts. “Sucks for you, but I have a peeping tom case for you to deal with.”

Ten minutes later, with the files tucked under my arm, I take Felina into one of the project rooms and hand her the bag of fresh brownies I picked up from a bakery on my way in.

Her eyes narrow. “You’re bribing me? What’s wrong?”

I snort and rest my ass on the table. “I wanted to tell you first, but I owed it to Minstrom.”

“No way! You better not be leaving the Bureau?”

“No.” I laugh. “You know that gorgeous omega who clung to my chest?”

Her eyes widen as she nods.

“She scent matched with me.”

Felina squeals. “Colt, that’s amazing! Congrats! May I?” She holds her arms out for a hug, and I happily let her. “Wow, an omega in the Nesters’ house? How’s Luka taking the news?”

“He’s so excited. I think it’s gonna be good for him.” I squeeze her once then release her, not wanting to get much of my scent on her. “Oh, and we got another scent matched lone-alpha too. You ever heard of Kye Romdine?”

She gasps and drops the brownie bag on the desk. “Gosh, boss. Are you for real?TheKye Romdine is joining your pack? The cellist?” Her blue eyes are wide as dinner plates.

I shrug. “I’m guessing so, since he’s hauling around an instrument case nearly as big as he is.”

“Rubbish!” Felina scoffs. “You totally profiled him the moment he stepped foot on your lawn, if not before.”

I laugh. She has me there. Kye had a few naughty schoolboy charges when he was a teen that got swept under the carpet thanks to his dad’s hotshot lawyers, but other than that he’s clean, besides the occasional weed use he admitted to. He’s truly dedicated himself to music and has quite the professional following. His playing isn’t half bad either, not that I’d tell him so.

Felina pulls a cake square out of the bag and holds it up. “Hey, is that what the brownies are for, celebrating?”

I flash her a sad smile. “I wish it was simply that but there’s something else.”

She bites into the chocolate, leaving a dark smear across her lips. “Lay it on me, boss,” she says, licking at the crumbs.

It’s those small things that make her an excellent partner for a dominant alpha like me. Deferring to me as boss, even though we’re both special agents, her relaxed posture, the just-right strength of her non-aggressive damp forest scent. I’d hate for this to cause issues between us, but I need to be honest with her.

I sigh and shrug my shoulders, telling myself to get it over with. “You know my omega’s background. Turns out, she’s scent matched with two of the feral alphas from the Grom Kennels.”

She chokes on her food, spraying crumbs everywhere. I get a cup of water from the bubbler as she pounds on her chest. “Shit, Colt!” she exclaims once she can breathe.

“Yeah. And one of them is the guy who choked you.”

“Holy cows! How’s that for coincidences?” Felina takes another sip and coughs. She glances at the rest of the brownie then tucks in the grease-stained bag for later. “What are you going to do?”
