“That was so good, Colt,” he says hoarsely. “Even better than I imagined.”

I snort. “Fourteen years and you never said anything? You’re a real bastard.”

He chuckles, the sound thick in his chest under my ear. “Yeah, but I’m a hot bastard, right?”

“So fucking hot!” I agree, thinking of how he’s flaunted his body over the years. And I’m the dumbass who thought he was being vain, when really he was trying to catch my eye. After a minute, I ask, “So what happens now?”

He ruffles a hand through my hair. “Relax. We’ll take things slow.”

I lift up on one elbow with scoff to study him. “You call this slow?” Did I shake a few brain cells loose?

Liam grins lazily up at me. “You have a full house and I’m used to being on my own. Plus, you recently bonded two alphas and the ferals need their space.”

I run my fingers through his hair to loosen the sweat, wondering if there’s more to his reluctance. I’m fine with casual sex if it’s with him, but no one who carries a torch that long can be considered a casual kind of guy. I don’t want to bulldoze my way through and cause him more pain.

“Is there another reason?” I ask softly.

Liam’s eyes shutter and the bed bounces as Luka sits down. “Liam lost his omega in his teens.”

“Shit,” I murmur, finally understanding why Liam’s taken so long to act. “How?”

“Leukemia.”

I shift onto my side and draw the burly man into my arms. I don’t tell him I’m sorry because I understand. We’re both men who know what it means to lose something. For me, it was my brothers in armstwo decades ago when I was in the military. For Liam, it was the great love of his life. Those kinds of wounds don’t heal easily.

He grips me tight in response. “Yeah. Just let me ease in, but don’t get the wrong idea. I am serious about you, Colt, and your whole pack.” He reaches one hand out and Luka squeezes it.

I bump my forehead against his. “Yeah, I told you already, I see you.”

“Finally.” Liam laughs and closes his eyes. “Let me catch my breath and then I’ll head out.”

I press my hand to his chest. “Catch your breath, but you aren’t going anywhere tonight.” His eyes fly open, and I smirk. “Because once you’re ready, you’re going to fuck that alpha cock into Luka while I claim your ass all over again.”

Liam’s belly flexes with a sharp breath and Luka groans. My new lover shakes his head, rustling his hair against the pillow. “Looking at you in the Bureau, people would think you’re a level man who goes by the books. But you’re really a filthy pervert, aren’t you?”

I shake with silent laughter. “Glad we understand each other, Agent Liam.”

“Agents with benefits,” he says smugly.

Chapter fifty-eight

Luka

A cool breeze stirs through the night air as Colt pulls the SUV up in the Darinian Mercy Hospital carpark. He said he was taking me out, but of all the places he might have chosen, this one never crossed my mind.

He takes my hand and leads me through the nearly deserted lobby to an elevator and we ride in silence to the top floor. The only noise is the whir of the elevator and the clinking of something in the zipped up shopping bag he carries over his shoulder.

“Where we going?” I ask, as he gets off at the top floor.

“Wait and see,” he orders, nodding to an orderly before unlocking a service door to another flight of stairs. My pulse runs higher than average, but I’m calm enough to follow him. I haven’t been near this hospital since my discharge fourteen years ago—there’s another closer where I went after getting shot.

We step out onto the roof, the city spreading in all directions like a glowing tapestry.

“You remember this hospital?” Colt asks softly as he leads me over to a bench seat.

I snort. “Of course. This is where the Bikie Butcher died after an Arsenic Brothers punk shivved him eleven times.”

Colt growls under his breath. “I was thinking of it more as where Luka Nesters was born.”
