I hang on when Luka hits top gear with that all-consuming pace of his, my head falling back on the beanbag. Kye holds my gaze, framed by the bars of the cells which will soon house my missing alphas, as I fall apart with a cry, shaking and shuddering with the explosion of heat powering through my core. Such beautiful music, and alphas.
I’m the luckiest omega on the planet.
Chapter thirty-seven
Colt
Felina hits the up button on the elevator. “So you’re off for two weeks starting tomorrow? When do your new pets arrive?” The elevator glides from the cafeteria back to our office floor.
“First one comes tomorrow. The other will be whenever Kye completes his certification.”
Her brows lift. “He’s struggling?”
I shrug. “Can’t blame the guy. It’s a tough ask to take on a grueling fighting-skills course on short notice, not to mention he’s a musician and sensitive about his hands.” I wriggle my fingers. “But I’ve started teaching him at home, and he’s making good progress now.”
She smirks at me. “Good excuse to pound him into the dust?”
I sniff. “Why does everyone have such a low opinion of me?”
“Because it’s true.” She cackles with a belly laugh, and I smile. “But hey, do you have someone to help you get them moved in? Just to be clear, I’m not volunteering.”
The elevator doors open. “Shit, I forgot to ask one of the guys if they could come round.”
“You need help with something, Colt?”
I twitch around to find Liam standing at the next elevator over, finger on the glowing down button. I was so focused on Felina,I didn’t even notice him. Fuck, does he wait for me here, or something? We keep running into each other near the elevators.
“Ah, well . . .” Truth is I don’t want Liam anywhere near my omega, for a bunch of reasons, but he’s one of the few people here who knows her story, including details about the ferals. And Luka’s story. I run a hand through my hair. If I have to admit it, he’s also a good pair of hands to have in an emergency.
He gets an odd, almost eager look on his face. “If there’s anything I can help with, let me do it. I still feel bad about what happened.”
Oh, so it’s guilt I’m sensing. “This is a personal matter, not for work.”
He spreads his hands. “I’m your guy, whatever it is.”
“I’m moving a feral alpha into my house, ten o’clock tomorrow.”
He nods. “I’ll be there.”
I frown. “What about work?”
“I’ve got overtime owed. Don’t stress, I’ll be there.” He claps my back as the elevator dings. “Admire you taking them in, pal. I need to get some lunch now before I fade away to a shadow.” He disappears through the metal doors.
Felina watches him go, a deep frown creasing her face. I flick her forehead as I pass. “Careful, your face will set like that.”
She rolls her eyes at me. “Har-har. Hilarious.”
I glance back at the floor numbers running down on the second elevator. “Isn’t Liam on the noon lunch break?”
My partner shrugs. “He switched recently. He always goes offsite to eat now.”
“Maybe he found a lover or something,” I murmur. None of my business, it’s simply unusual for a man of Liam’s position to be asolo alpha. He’s younger, more handsome, and now has a better job than I do. Well, without Luka and now Rose, I’d be a loner too.
I check my watch. It’s five minutes to one, so I send Luka a quick text before he has his rest time, and then I send Rose a message too, letting them both know I’m thinking of them. The rest idea came from the doms’ group I joined to learn how to do it. Since most of us are physically demanding on our subs, an afternoon rest makes sure they keep their energy up for evening frolics, especially if the fun runs late into the night.
I like to send him a message right before he lies down. Maybe he and Rose will rest together, which is an idea I quite like.
“You’re so smitten,” Felina says with a knowing grin. “Come on, stop thinking about your omega. We’ve got paperwork to file before you abandon me for two weeks.”
