My body cries out to say yes, but I have my intervention license precisely because I passed the omega conditioning test. Resisting a full heat scent seemed easy, until now.
I wheeze through Rose’s bruising grip on my throat. “If I say no, you’ll call in another alpha?”
“Yes.”
I turn my face away to hide my snarl at the idea. When I’ve given myself a moment, I speak again. “Is it alright if I make a phone call?”
The senior nurse smiles. “Of course, but please understand that we can’t leave you unsupervised until we have a clear answer.”
I nod and balance Rose’s ass on the edge of the bed so I can dig my phone out of my pocket and dial Luka.
He answers on the first ring, and I grimace, knowing he’s probably worked himself up with anxiety. Even though I don’t talk about it, he always guesses when I’m going out on raid. “You okay, Colt?”
I nod, even though he can’t see me. “I’m fine, love, but I’m in a bit of a predicament.”
His voice rises and he speaks quickly. “What happened?”
“There was an abused omega at the raid, and she won’t let go of me. I’m at the Center now and she’s in a bad way—” Heat burns in my cheeks, and I rush through the rest of it. “They’re asking me if I want to use my emergency intervention license to help her.”
“Okay, and?”
“To help her through her heat, Luka.”
“Yeah, I read that loud and clear. So why are you calling?”
I groan. “Love, we’ve never discussed this, and she’s not a scent match.”
The line goes quiet. The omega in my arms writhes into me and whimpers. “Luka?” I press, needing an answer.
His mellow voice filters through the receiver. “You joined the Bureau to help omegas, Sir, so help the omega.”
With one sentence he blows all my uncertainty out of the water.
Luka clears his throat. “You don’t need my permission to do your job, but if you did, I’d give it wholeheartedly. And I’ll be waiting to help however you need when you get home.”
My hand tightens around the phone. Fuck, this man has a beautiful talent for simplifying life.
“Alright.” I grip the phone tightly, picturing him on the other end. “Don’t wait in the foyer. I could be late. Eat, shower, and go to bed when you’re ready.”
“Understood, Sir.”
“I love you.” I click off the line, knowing he won’t give the words back to me. Luka doesn’t believe he’s worthy to use the L-word, but we’re working on it.
The omega turns her face up and that sweet pink bow of a mouth calls to me, her pale green eyes wide with need. She’s truly irresistible.
“I’ll do it.”
“Thank you.” The nurse gently touches the omega’s shoulder. “Rose, would you like this man to help you through your heat?”
“Yes. Help me,” the omega pants.
“Consent is acknowledged.” The nurse jots something down on her tablet. “We’ll wait right outside the door. Let her nest if possible, then knot her, and call us once she’s calm and we’ll administer the sedative. Under no circumstances are you to bite her and form a mating bond. Oh, and use a condom from the shelf there.” She points with her stylus pen.
I nod, knowing the process. “What happens to her heat after the sedative?”
“Most of the time it ends the heat. She deserves the chance to find a pack and have that special time in complete safety.”
Those words claw at my heart, but I nod. “I’ll do my best.” For her, Rose.
