This whole time, I wasso immersed in my pain and this wild certainty that he would be with me through all of it no matter what, that I never really considered how all of it must have affected him.
Cain is wrong about one thing, though. He has been showing me how much he loves me every single day for months now. I was just too stubborn to see it.
He is so strong for me, so understanding, and so supportive no matter what I need. He is always there for me and to be honest, that constant is the only thing that made me want to find a way to heal and push through the darkest time of my life.
I pull my hands over my tired face.He loves me. I try to wrap my mind around that. He told me that dozens of times, but the words never felt as true as his actions…
And I foolishly told him I love him too.
I’m being eaten by the fear that someday it will all be ruined by him finding out I truly am his biggest weakness. And maybe he doesn’t even care right now, so I’m safe at the moment, because he already dealt with both my dad’s army and with Unwanted, but it’s a cruel world we live in. There will always be some new enemy, some new land to conquer, some new Officer Asher who will get under his skin… they all will want a way to hurt him through me.
And he can’t have that.
Chapter 56 – Movie Night
“Ash, wake up, Little Wolf,” Cain is nudging my shoulder…
With his nose?
“Leave me alone,” I grunt and try to cover my head with his pillow.
It is yanked out of my hands with the covers, and I screech when he pulls me up and hoists me over his shoulder. “Cain! Put me down.”
He swiftly slides me down his gorgeous body in a way that makes me thankful that he no longer has any knives on him, at least not on his chest.
He probably still has some in his back pocket or something.
Before my feet touch the floor, he picks me up bridal style and opens the door wider with his foot.
“Where are you taking me?” I hiss at him while I’m getting an adrenaline rush, leaving our room for the first time in over a month.
“We have our monthly movie night.”
“You don’t have movie nights here!” I hiss again, trying to hold onto him while he runs down the stairs.
He’s dressed more casually now, and his black hair is still in the bun I made.
“We do,” he insists, putting me down when we reach the first floor, but he keeps his arm loosely wrapped around my neck.
He pulls me for a chaste kiss on the temple and starts steering me further into the dark corridor. The one with his office. I was there so many times afterthat, but still, the first memory that comes to my mind is the Rogue Prince almost drowning me with his blood.
I try to stop but he gently pushes me forward.
“Oh, Alpha, here you are, Gamma is already picking up the movie,” Beta Lucifer’s head pokes out from the doors at the end further speeding up my pulse. “Hi, Luna!”
He goes back inside as quickly as he just showed up, and I look at Cain with questioning eyes.
“I told you, we have movie nights,” he whispers huskily into my ear, tickling me slightly with his facial hair.
It can still be a trap but it’s not like I won’t be killed by him at some point in my life anyway, so I guess we can get it over with now. Why not? I take a deep breath and go inside his office with him.
It’s dark and with my night vision, I can see there is completely no one here.
“What the heck?”
Beta was just here!
Cain chuckles at my confused face and leads me to the tall bookshelf behind his desk on the right. He pushes one of the books, the one with an emerald green spine, and the bookshelf opens like a door with a light squeak.
