Principal Crowder gestures toward her office. “Come in.”

They are eye-to-eye as he steps ahead of her into her office. He gives her a smirk as he passes. “As you wish, ma’am.”

I squint when I see the corner of Crowder’s lips twitch. Wait! She likes him? What is that all about? How can a school principal find anything to like in the rule-breaking bad boy?

The door to the front office swings open and I turn to find Lionel wheeling in a mop bucket.

“I’m sorry!” I say. Or more like, I whine.

He waves a hand at me. “Don’t even worry about it, Ava. This is nothing compared to the mud I have to scrape off the mats inside all the doors.”

“I’ll go to the nearest bathroom and try to keep my splatter to a minimum.” Lionel gives me a thumbs up before wringing his mop into the bucket and slapping it onto the floor. I wave at Mrs. Jensen as I trudge toward the door. “Thanks for your help.”

“Anytime, dear.”

I know she’s genuine, but all I hear is pity for the poor clumsy girl. Swinging the door open, I sigh as I head to the nearest bathroom, trying—and failing—to avoid leaving a trail of mud in my wake.
