It doesn’t matter if Carter is a master in bed. He’s off limits. I need to remember that the next time he turns me on.
The flashing red light on the portable phone reminds me why I’m here. Logan. Why the fuck is he calling me?
Lifting the handset, I mutter, “I don’t know how you got this number, asshole, but you’d better lose it. You hear me?”
“How else am I to contact you when you blocked me on everything? I can’t believe you’re treating me this way, baby. After everything we’ve been through.”
“What. Do. You. Want?”
“I’ve got good news, actually,” he replies, his voice perking.
“You have two minutes. And that’s me being generous.”
“And you’ll be even more generous when you hear this. Ready?”
“Logan, stop wasting my time.”
“The lead actress walked off the set yesterday,” he says. “Well, we told her to go. She was being a diva about everything, complaining about the work conditions and what-not. We told her not to let the door hit her on the way out and… yeah, she left.”
“What should I do with that information?” I ask coldly.
“What do you mean, baby? You’ve got the role. I’m giving it to you on a silver platter. No auditions, nothing.”
“Oh, now you’re the generous one.”
“Aren’t I?”
He missed the sarcasm in my tone, obviously.
“There’s just one tiny problem,” he says.
“Is there?”
“Yeah… I hate that you’ll have to do this because it screams unprofessional, but you have to quit that job. Conflicting schedule and all.”
The nerve of this… this… this!Anger makes me see red. My fingers tighten around the headset. “I’m not in a position to tell you what to do with that offer. Don’t call me again, Logan. Find another sucker to give that role.”
The handset lands in the cradle with a crunch that makes me wonder if I slammed it down too hard. A deep breath does nothing to quell my anger. I take another, and by the fifth one, I’m still pissed off by my ex’s audacity.
But as I glance out the window at the desert, I realize being angry is a waste of time. I have a decent job, one that will open doors so I can never go broke again. After signing that contract and seeing those six figures, I immediately went on the hunt for another apartment, and I’m now waiting as my new landlord completes the renovations. No more living from paycheck to paycheck, worrying about the bills. In a few weeks, I’ll put Old Lizzy, my beat-up car to pasture. My life is turning around. I won’t let Logan steal my joy.
Buoyed by those facts, I make my way out. The smile stays on my face as I open the door and step out.
Then run into a hard body.
“Whoa,” Carter mumbles, his grip on my upper arm stopping me from stumbling. “I got you.”
“No need to get me.” I shake him off. “I’m perfectly fine.”
A soft smile tugs the corner of his lips apart as his eyes drop to my chest level, then back up at me. “Yes, you are.” He raises both hands. “Sorry if I overstepped.”
“No, but you’re certainly trespassing.” I point to the right. “That’s your side of the trailer.”
He smirks. “Maybe I’m more comfortable on your side of the trailer, Princess.” Mischief fills his eyes, the brown globes darkening a little. “Your couch certainly looks comfier than mine. Bigger. Enough to hold two bodies, if you know what I mean.”
Ignoring the flare of desire in my belly, I arrange a serious face. “I thought we agreed on no flirting in private.”
“No,youdecided, my delicate flower. I can’t agree to that. I don’t have that self-control.” He makes a sound like a mix of a rumble and laughter. “Not when it ruffles you so much.”
