“Don’t even think about it, Ezio,” my father mumbles. “Get the fuck off your brother.”

I throw a glare at him. He disengages the safety. “I’m not going to repeat myself.”

With a sigh, I ease off him. Alessandro sits up with a groan, rubbing the back of his head. “You fucker.”

He gets to his feet and sucker punches my gut again. I fall to my knees, gasping to catch my breath.

“Alessandro, that’s no way to treat your older brother,” my father walks in. My vision is hazy, but I can see that his lower lip is bleeding. He closes the door behind him and watches me squirm on the floor with a smug look on his face. Alessandro picks me up and pushes me onto a nearby chair. The pain in my stomach is receding now, and I’ve gotten hold of my breath. He’s lucky Stefano has this gun pointed at me.

“What the fuck is this all about?” I mutter.

“Why don’t you tell me?” Stefano grabs the bag that I dropped and opens it. He dumps the wad of cash on the carpeted floor and throws the empty bag at me. “Fucking explain it to me then, Ezio.” I could only glare at him and my brother in silence.

Stefano approaches me and waves a stack of cash in front of my face. “Tell me, what were you planning on doing with all of this money?”

“It’s none of your fucking business,” I say.

He laughs and rubs the busted lip on his pathetic face. I hate my father. I don’t even want to call him that. I hate this man with every fiber of my being. This person I vowed to be the exact opposite of everything he was. This devil, who brought me upon this hell. I curse him with every breath in me.

“I wouldn’t get so cocky,” says Stefano. “Especially if you’ve been stealing from me.”

Alessandro grins as he stands behind him, cowering behind our father like always. “Don’t you think I wouldn’t notice your little outings?” Stefano continues. “I know you’ve been going around town, taking your little collections. I know you’ve been skimming off the top, Ezio, which I don’t fucking understand because you have everything you need in here.”

“I told you; it’s none of your business,” I reply. He’s lying. I haven’t been skimming off anything. Little does he know I have my own side businesses.

Stefano whacks me. The pain stings throughout my entire face, but I bear it down. This is nothing compared to what’s going to come next.

“Now you’re talking back to me?” Stefano asks in a mocking tone. “Where have I gone wrong? Did I raise you to be a liaranda thief? Now, tell me, what were you planning on doing with this money? Were you escaping with your pretty lady friend?”

My eyes widen at the last sentence. Stefano catches the horrified look on my face as I realize he has discovered my well-kept secret.

“Yeah, you sneaky little traitor. I’ve got the Borelli bitch.”

“Don’t you fucking dare touch her,” I threaten him.

“I have to give it to you, Ezio,” says Stefano. “You kept her well-hidden for me. I have to thank you for that. If you hadn’t kept her in check, one of our other enemies would’ve had her by now.”

“What are you thanking him for?” Alessandro cuts in. “He lied to you, Father! He kept her awayfromyou and made us run in circles like fools! You should punish him! He betrayed our family! Are you out of your goddamn mind?”

Stefano turns around and punches him right in his face. Alessandro coughs up blood and holds his bruised mouth with his hand.

“You impatient idiot. Go wait in the hall,” he orders him. “Now!”

He glares at the two of us before retreating into the hallway. I’m left alone with Stefano, my father, the Don of the Rossi family, and the obstacle standing between me and my beloved Nicki.

“Your brother always talked too much,” he remarks.

“He’snotmy brother,” I spat. “Where is she? What have you done to her? I fucking swear to god, if you even harm a single hair on her head,I will fucking kill you!”

“Relax,” he smirks at me. “She’s done more damage to me than I did to her.” He rubs his bleeding lip. “I’ve done nothing…yet.”

“I won’t let you have her!” I scream. I rise up from the chair and lunge at him, but he stops me by raising his gun again.

“It’s too late, Ezio,” he sniggers at me. “I already have her.”

The butt of the gun slaps my face, bursting my brow and lips open, but my body has gone completely numb. It feels like everything is slipping into slow motion, and every inch of my body hurts. I feel completely powerless as Stefano grips my throat, the heavy metal landing squarely on my jaw. In the distance, I hear Nicki’s laughter. I must be hallucinating but it seems so real. I can smell the shampoo on her hair, the scent of her skin, and the perfume she usually wears. She’s laying on the bed, naked with only the sheet to cover her breasts. She’s beautiful, she’s sweet, and she’s mine.
