“But father —” he protests.

“Get out,” with those two words, Alessandro leads the two other men outside. There’s a look of disappointment on his face. The fucker probably expected a ‘good job’ pat from his sore daddy. I snicker as I watch his back. Meanwhile, Stefano turns his attention to me.

“You probably know who I am,” he says.

“You’re Rossi swine,” I spit the words like poison from my mouth.

“Ah, feisty,” he grins. “I expect nothing less from a Borelli.”

Stefano stands up from his chair and walks around the desk. He stands next me, smoking his cigar with one hand while the other reaches out to trace my face.

“You look like your mother,” he remarks. “She was a fine woman back in her day.”

“Don’t you dare mention my mother in your filthy mouth,” I hiss.

He chuckles, shaking his head. “You’re probably wondering why you’re here.”

“You want to kill me.” I glare at him.

“Kill you?” Stefano lets out a hearty laugh as if he couldn’t believe what I just told him. “Why on earth would I kill you? Did Ezio tell you that? Of course, he told you thatIwanted to kill you. That’s so he can have you all for himself.”

His fingers pull down the zipper of my hoodie, and his eyes linger at the collar of my shirt with a heavy lecherous gaze. “I don’t want to kill you,” Stefano leans down until his smoker’s breath is all over my face. “Iwantyou, Nicoletta.”

“What are you talking about?” It takes all the energy in me to restrain myself from spitting in his face. Something tells me that if I aggravate him now, things aren’t going to end well for me. He must have seen the horrified look on his face because he smiles at me.

“It can be our little secret,” says Stefano. “My men think I want the Borelli girl dead for rivalry reasons, but on the contrary, I actuallyneedyou, Nicki. You see, I need an heir. You’ve met my younger son, he’s incompetent and too sensitive. He’s weak just like his mother was. He’s not fit to be a leader. And I’m sure you’re well-acquainted with Ezio. He would have been the perfect Don to take over my empire, but he’s a filthy traitor, and there’s nothing I hate more than people who violate our code. Do you see where I’m going here?”

I try to look away, but he grabs my chin and forces me to look at him. “What exactly do you want from me?” My voice is trembling. I just want him to stop talking. I want everything to be over. His grip is hurting my jaw, and I can barely breathe.

“Tonight,” he whispers so close that I can see his cigarette-stained teeth. “When everything else is taken care of, I willfuckyou. I will fuck you until you scream my name. I will fuck you every night until you bear me a child, a boy who will grow up one day to take over the Rossi empire.”

I gasp and my hands instinctively cover my stomach. If Stefano finds out that I’m already carrying Ezio’s child, I will be of no use to him, and he will kill me.

Stefano pulls me toward him and smashes his mouth against my lips. I try to push him away, but his grip is too strong. I then bite his lip hard, and he screams and pushes me away.

“You bitch!” He wipes his bleeding lip with the hem of his shirt. He gives me an excited look as if I had just woken up a sadistic beast. “I’ll take care of you later,” Stefano grabs the coat from his chair.

Just after he leaves, I collapse on the floor. Tears start flowing down my cheeks as I try to compose myself. I can’t give up now. I have to find a way to escape before it’s too late.I quickly make my way to the desk and start searching the drawers. There isn’t anything interesting that I can use as a weapon. As I’m about to lose hope, I spot a writing desk in one corner and on it lay a paper knife.Yes!I grab the knife and hide it in my pocket.

My eyes turn towards the door. It’s probably locked and guarded but I need to try. I grab a pin from my hair and bend it.

I guess all those years of sneaking out finally paid off.

Chapter Twenty-Five

Ezio

The meeting was business as usual. We all gathered in the den while my father sat in his seat and smoked his first cigarette of the day. Eduardo, his right-hand man, delivered his reports as my brother, Alessandro, sat next to him, chewing a piece of gum. The war was becoming more intense, and the press was starting to pick up on it. In the last three weeks, we’d bombed three of the Borellis’ biggest warehouses. They managed to hit us back by taking down some of our foot soldiers and joints, but nothing we couldn’t afford to lose. From the looks of it, the Rossis were winning the battle.

Even though I was listening to the updates, my mind was a million miles away.

I had just found out that morning that Nicki is carrying my baby. My heir. When we confirmed the pregnancy, she looked terrified, but I quickly reassured her. The timing might be unexpected, but I’m excited for this new chapter in my life. For the first time, I’m looking forward to my future.

I sat back in my chair and scanned the faces of the men surrounding me. It was now my responsibility to protect her and our child from these devils. The very thought of my father hurting them made my blood boil. If I had to kill every single one of them in this room to protect Nicki, I would do it in a heartbeat.

I already told her that we would leave tonight as soon as I finished things up here. There was no doubt about it. Once I failed to show up at the manor tomorrow, they’ll put out a manhunt for me. By then, we should—would be far away from their clutches.

As I looked at the relaxed faces of enemies sitting around me, I gathered that they were still not suspicious of what I planned to do.
