“Stay close to me. We don’t separate for any reason, Grace.”
“I know.”
The elevator doors opened, and I followed her inside the hall, taking a left to enter the clinic. Women filled the room, some pregnant, others holding infants. A few looked bored. I understood since I hated waiting. It annoyed the fuck out of me.
I took a seat with my back to the wall, a habit I found hard to break. Once you learned to observe a room and assess it, it became second nature. Grace checked in before joining me.
“You’re scowling.”
“I hate doctor’s offices.”
“This is an OBGYN,” she laughed.
“Worse,” I grumbled.
“You won’t think so when we’re here to see our baby.”
I perked up. “Is that an invitation to put one inside you?”
“Well, it’s not like we’re being safe about it.”
True. “But do you want kids?” I hadn’t asked her yet.
“I do.” She winked. “I’m not getting any younger. I’ll be thirty in a couple of years.”
“I’m forty next summer,” I admitted.
“How did we never discuss our ages before now?”
My shoulders lifted in a shrug. “I was distracted by your pretty smile.”
“And the vee between my legs,” she whispered with a giggle.
“Yeah.” I slid my arm around her shoulders and hugged her against my side. “You doin’ okay?”
“I’ll let you know when I’m not.”
“Noted.”
We sat in that waiting room for over half an hour before a nurse called Grace’s name. I stood with her, daring the nurse to refuse to let me in. She arched a brow but gestured for us to head to the scale. After checking Grace’s vitals, she led us to another room.
How fun.
Grace tapped her fingers on her thighs, and I reached for her hand, holding it as the doctor knocked. The man who entered appeared to be in his early fifties with a graying beard and salt-and-pepper hair. He looked harmless.
“Hi, Grace. I see you’re here about birth control.”
“I am.”
“When were you last on a contraceptive?”
That caught my interest. Was that the last time she’d been sexually active? I didn’t have to guess because the doctor asked the same question.
“Well, before yesterday, it had been a year.”
Damn, she didn’t even blush when she said it.
