“Oh!” I sprinted to the bathroom where I hunched over the toilet and dry heaved. Nothing but bile came from my empty stomach, but that didn’t stop my body from trying.
“Beale,” Jabez said, running over and coming to stand next to me.
“There’s nothing,” I said, flushing the toilet anyway. Not knowing what was going on with me, I began to cry.
“Come here.” Jabez wrapped his arms around me, and I crumpled against him. “I had an idea about what’s going on with you last night but you were so tired.”
That got my attention. “What? What is it?”
“My love, I think you might be pregnant.” He squeezed me tighter.
There were a couple of things to unpack in that sentence. One, he kind of said he loved me. Two, I was what?
Pregnant.
Huh.
“I need a test.” Because above anyone else, I trusted my mate. He was a healer, after all. Even if he wasn’t, he had great instincts.
“Would you be upset if I told you I already got one?” he asked.
“No. I would be relieved. Did you really?”
He nodded. “I left it in the car. Give me one minute.”
I let the notion soak in while he was gone. Could I be pregnant? We hadn’t been together long but, then again, it only took once.
Looking down at my bare stomach, I placed both hands over it. If I had a pup inside me, then I would love it with all my heart.
“I’m here.”
The next few moments passed in a blur. I peed on the stick. Waited in the bedroom. Waited some more. Jabez checked his watch over and over.
Two minutes felt like a lifetime.
“It’s ready,” my alpha said. “Do you want to look or should I?”
“Let’s do it together.”
We walked back into the bathroom and I flipped over the plastic stick.
Two lines.
“I’m pregnant.” The words felt like someone else was saying them.
“We’re having a baby. Omega mine, are you happy?” Jabez cupped my face with his hands.
“I am. I’m so happy. Are you? I mean, the timing isn’t amazing. You work so much. I…”
“Hey,” he said, kissing my cheeks, bringing me out of my overthinking. “I’ll do whatever it takes to be here for you and our babe. Trust me?”
I let out a long breath. “I do. I’m not asking you to quit working, Jabez.”
“Of course you’re not. But I can cut back some. Make some changes. You won’t be in this alone. I’ll always be here for you.”
Fresh tears streamed down my face. “I know that. I do. I love you, mate.”
“I love you, Beale. You’ve made me the happiest alpha by becoming my mate, but this? I never thought I’d be so happy.”
