I fucking knew knives weren’t my thing.
My preference was whatever wand Jabez wielded.
“Please tell me you brought a coat,” the alpha whispered in my ear.
“I did. I left it in a locker.”
The last thing I wanted to do was be out of this alpha’s presence, but the weight of everything that happened tonight had exhausted me in a strange, delicious way. The need to curl up in his embrace pulsed stronger than ever.
“Good, sweet omega. I’m glad you take care of yourself.”
“Thanks,” I muttered, not really knowing how to respond to that. Hearing his praise added a layer of sweetness to him and made my knees weak.
He held out his hand for the key to the locker, retrieved my coat, and put it on me as he had before and reached into his pocket, retrieving a long, finely woven red scarf. I didn’t even know how it fit into those tight pants. “This is mine.” He folded it around my neck and tucked it into the collar of my coat. “It will keep you warm on your drive home.”
“Oh, I walked, so even better.”
Jabez cocked his head, regarding me with a stare I didn’t recognize. Of course, I barely knew the man. But damn, I wanted to. Wanted to see the look in his eyes as he hovered above my body, fucking me in long, languid strokes. To see his ruffled hairfirst thing in the morning. I’d do anything to learn more about him.
“You walked here? I… It’s not safe for you to walk back alone.” He looked behind him, conflicted. He was an owner here. He had work to do. Things to handle. Plus, he was a healer. People needed him.
I bet no one on earth needed him more in this moment than I did, though. But I couldn’t let my own needs surpass those of all the others. “I’m a big boy,” I said, laughing.
He stroked my cheek with his knuckles. “No boy. You are quite the man. I wish I could walk you home myself, but I have things to do here.”
“It’s okay. How about I text you when I get home.”
“Why didn’t you drive? You have valet privileges.”
Shrugging one shoulder, for a blip of a second, I considered lying. “I have an old car. It barely gets me to work. I give the old girl a rest when I can. Besides, I like to walk at night.”
“Would you let me get you a ride?” He stepped closer to me, pinning me against the nearest wall. Bass pounded all around us, and people’s conversations roared and moved in waves.
“It’s not necessary.”
He made a low sound deep in his throat. “How about this? It would give me great pleasure to see that you’re taken home safely, omega.”
Mine. Omega mine.I would’ve done just about anything in that moment to hear that.
“Well, I don’t want to deny you any pleasure, alpha. Sure. But, I owe you twice.”
He ordered a ride on an app on his phone and then moved us outside with his hand on the small of my back. “You don’t owe me anything, Beale. I would love that dinner with you though. How about somewhere not so fancy? I’m a simple man. In fact, I prefer simple.”
My heart sank. He could probably tell I didn’t have a lot of money.
“How about Friday night? I’m off of work. Oh, but Cuffed is probably pretty busy that night, right?”
“I’m actually free on Friday. I’d love to go to dinner with you. What time?”
We decided on seven, and he insisted on picking me up.
“Text me when you get home, please,” he asked again.
“Of course.” I opened the door to the car to get in, but he shut it as I turned.
“There’s something I’ve been wanting to do all night, Beale. All day. Ever since the first time I saw you.”
“We did a lot tonight,” I said, giggling.
