The woman balks, nearly tripping as she stumbles backwards, thrown off guard by the unusual behaviour, quickly scrambling to the yellow mustang, getting inside as hastily as a woman her size can, before she burns rubber and speeds off.
“Jesus, Kitten. Don’t run head first into danger like that. You could have been hurt.” Bossi scolds, and Rhys turns back, not looking worried about anything else but Dee.
Ignoring them, I rush forward, crowding Dee in, my eyes travelling over her face and neck, which is red from the grip that ugly arse woman had on her.
“Dee. Tell me you’re ok.”
Her chocolate eyes are hard with fury, but she nods.
“I’ll be even better when I drain that bitch of every last drop of blood in her body.”
“I knew it!” Rhys cries, pushing me to the side as she grips Dee’s shoulders. “Youaretalking. Who the fuck was that bitch?” Rhys demands, giving Dee a little shake, but Dee clamps her lips shut. “Oh, come on. Give me something. If you’re not going to tell me about who I just chased away, at least say something to me.” Rhys wags her brows. “Say, I want to kiss Rhys.”
I shoulder her out of the way. “Fuck off George, she’s mine. You have your own clan of lovers.”
“I think we should be focusing on what Dee just said.” Simon interjects, coming around to face Dee. “You gonna drain that bitch of every drop of blood? Are you a vampire?”
Dee cracks a smile. Jesus, I love seeing her smile.
“Who was that lady?” Shaun asks and Dee shakes her head, no longer willing to talk.
I think back on what Dee said to her when the lady released her neck. Dee called her Bianca.
“Shit, was that Travis’ foster mum? Bianca Kerr?” I ask, and when Dee nods, my heart sinks. She really is in danger. What if I hadn't come out when I did?
“We need to call the Angels and Griffin,” I state and Dee shakes her head, anger flaring across her face before she turns and storms back into the swimming complex.
“Dee knows the Angels?” Rhys asks, not an ounce of playfulness left on her face.
“Uhhh.” I rake my hand through my hair, not sure what I should and shouldn’t be saying. “You’ll have to ask Dee.”
I dash off after Dee and hear Rhys huff behind me before I hear Simon and Shaun tend to her. I don’t have time to answer her questions. Right now, I need to make sure my girl is ok, because Bianca Kerr coming at her like that is fucking bad. Really fucking bad.
I follow Dee back to the yellow team tent, and watch as she gathers up her bag, so I do the same with my things.
Looks like we are outta here. Thank fuck.
Spending the day at a swimming carnival when I only have days left with Dee isn’t how I want to spend my time. I know she’s been insisting on attending school for my sake. I’m pretty sure she has it in her head that attending is what’s best for me for when she leaves, but school is pointless at this stage.
Nothing matters but her.
Nothing.
We hurry out of the complex, ignoring the teachers and dodging her foster mum, before climbing into my car and driving to my house. Since Dee’s foster dad works from home, going there when we are meant to be at the swimming carnival isn’t an option.
Dee remains quiet during the drive, and I leave her to stay in her silent mode as I focus on getting her to safety. Her silence isn’t unfamiliar, but the expression she’s wearing is unsettling me.
I wait until I have her back in my bedroom before I ask her anything, and I sit on my bed as she paces in silence.
“Talk to me. What happened? Why did you go out there and talk to that woman?”
She shakes her head, not speaking, but continues pacing. Then she stops as if she’s thought or remembered something, and she takes out her phone.
I guess she’s gonna use her notes app to speak to me. The idea of that disappoints me a little. Now that I’ve heard her voice, I want to hear it all the time, but I also understand that she needs to do things in her way. She will use her voice when she can.
Dee hands me her phone, and for a moment, I’m confused. It’s not showing the notes app and any of her thoughts. It’s showing a message thread. An Instagram message thread between @hush_tiny_dancer and @trav_theman.
“Are these messages between you and Travis?” I glance up at her and she stops pacing to look at me and nods. Then she steps forward and points to the ones from today, so I read the one Travis sent.
