Brant nods. “She basically gave up her freedom three years ago, though. At least now she’ll be with you.”
I can only hope that’s good enough for her. That I’m enough for her.
I point toward a folder in the middle of the island. “All the information I have on Damion Tombeck is in there. He’s been in the wind for three years. A few leads have led to nothing.”
“We’ll find him,” Brant says.
Paige leans into the kitchen from the hallway, and I motion for her to join me with a wave.
She smiles, and her cheeks pinken as the guys turn to look at her. The only contact she’s had with either of them since they walked into my apartment at Edge two weeks ago was last night when Brant drove her here. They’ve been watching her, and she knows it, but they haven’t had a chance to talk and catch up.
As soon as she’s close enough, I pull her into my arms, her back against my front. “Brant and JT will be helping find Damion Tombeck.”
She’s wearing jeans and a white sweater. Her hair is in a messy bun. She has no makeup on. She’s never looked more appealing to me. She’s real. She’s stunning. She’s mine.
She winces. She still hates this idea, and I can easily read her mind. Now, she’s worried about JT and Brant, too.
JT clears his throat. “We’ll find him, Paige.”
She leans into me. “Please be careful.”
I give her a squeeze. “This is what they do, baby. What we all do. Finding people is our job.”
“I suspect most of your clients actually pay you,” she points out, tipping her head back.
I lift a brow and stare down at her. “Don’t go there, Paige. Never.”
She sighs.
I kiss her forehead possessively. “As you both know, Paige is a computer genius in her own right. She would have made a huge name for herself by now if she hadn’t been forced to give it all up. I have no doubt she will get right back in the saddle and help find her killer in no time. But she’ll be doing so from the security of my home office.”
JT nods. “I assume you’ll be spending most of your time at home for a while, too.”
“I will. But the minute we get a lead, I’ll be out in the field.”
Paige stiffens in my arms, but she says nothing. She knows by now this discussion is moot. I will find Tombeck and take him out of the picture.
“I know I don’t need to remind you not to breathe a word about this assignment or Paige’s existence to a living soul.”
“Of course,” Brant responds. He picks up the folder from the center of the island and stands. “We’ll get to the office and get started.” His gaze shifts to Paige. “We’ll find this asshole and get your freedom back.”
“Thank you,” she murmurs.
I release my tight grip on her and take her hand as I follow my men back to the elevator. A minute later, we’re once again alone. It’s like there’s more air in the room now that Paige is here. The penthouse is brighter, warmer, more inviting.
I want to lament the years I lost, but I can’t seem to do that. She’s here now. I’ll never let her go again.
Paige squeals when I bend down, tuck my shoulder into her belly, and lift her into the air. “Dane!”
I wrap a hand around her thighs to steady her and march back into our bedroom. I need to be inside her again. Then maybe I’ll be sated enough to get back to putting her life to rights.
