Before I can catch my breath, his strong arms are around me, lifting me off the ice with a swift, powerful motion. My body comes to rest against his, the cold air suddenly forgotten as he presses his lips to mine in a kiss that melts the cold away.
“EWWWW!” Abby whines, covering her eyes as she continues to talk and we break apart from our kiss. “The triplets are awake!” Abby shouts, Boomer trying to shimmy past her legs towards us but she holds him back firmly.
“Thanks Abs.” I smile, making my way over to the steps with a smile. My muscles ache, but the exhaustion is nothing compared to the joy of these little moments, especially now with the Olympics so close.
"No rush, your mom is getting them ready to open presents," Abby says casually, leaning against the doorframe with a lazy smile. Boomer, on the other hand, is in full chaos mode, running circles around the kitchen like he’s just discovered the magic of Christmas.
After taking off my skates and grabbing my jacket, I walk with Christopher and Abby back inside. The warmth of the house wraps around me like a comforting embrace. But the first thing I notice as we step through the door is Boomer happily munching away on the bacon Caleb made for breakfast.
"Boomer!" I laugh, watching him greedily devour the crispy strips. "That’s for us!"
Caleb rolls his eyes. “That dog is a menace.”
“That dog was your idea, Caleb.” Chris shrugs, swiping up a fresh piece of bacon off the kitchen table.
I shake my head, going upstairs to see Mom holding Ivy, as she carefully dresses her in a red velvet dress with lace trim. It's the triplets first Christmas, and I can’t get enough of how adorable she looks. I feel like a kid again, my excitement bubbling over as I see the decorations and the Christmas knick-knacks scattered around the house.
“Mama, she looks so adorable,” I say, my voice soft with awe. I kiss Ivy’s cheek, and she squeals in delight, her tiny hands reaching up to grab my face. I kiss her hands before looking over at Asher and Leo in the play area.
They’re dressed in matching little sweaters, the soft green of the fabric complementing their big, innocent eyes. Asher’s sweater has a little snowman on it, and Leo’s has a reindeer with a shiny red nose.
I crouch down next to them, grinning as they look up at me, their small hands reaching for my face. “Hey, little guys,” I murmur, brushing my fingers through Asher’s dark curls and gently tickling Leo’s chin. “You two are looking so handsome in your Christmas sweaters.”
Asher lets out a small giggle, his eyes crinkling at the corners as I squeeze him gently. Leo, ever the curious one, grabs at the sleeves of my jacket, tugging at it playfully. “You ready for presents?” I ask them, my heart racing as they clap their hands together, squealing.
I stand and scoop up both of the babies, one in each arm, feeling their little bodies wiggle with excitement. Their giggles fill the air, and I can’t help but laugh along with them,my heart swelling with joy. Mama places Ivy on her hip as we make our way downstairs.
The living room is bathed in soft light, the tree sparkling with ornaments and twinkling lights. The entire room feels magical, like something out of a holiday movie. Christopher grabs Leo out of my arms as he reaches for him and we place each of the triplets on the floor in front of the tree, before settling on the floor behind them.
Caleb is already sitting on the couch, teasing Boomer with some French toast, and Mom is next to him, beaming as she watches us bring the babies down. Abby comes in with the babies’ sippy cups, placing them on the coffee table before sitting next to Chris on the floor.
“Look at them,” Christopher says with a smile, his eyes on the babies. “Little Christmas miracles.”
“Our little miracles.” I whisper back, leaning my head against Chris.
“Okay,” Abby sings, grabbing three presents and placing them in front of each of the babies. “Open these first.”
Immediately they reach for the wrapping paper and presents stacked in front of them. Their tiny fingers grasp at the colorful paper, and they both start to tear at it with glee. I watch them, my heart overflowing, as their tiny hands fumble with the gifts, their giggles echoing through the room. The house is filled with laughter, love, and the soft crackle of Christmas music playing in the background.
Asher unwraps a small toy car, his face lighting up when he realizes it rolls across the floor.
“I can’t believe they’re already opening presents,” Imurmur to Christopher, my voice filled with awe. He looks over at me, a small, knowing smile playing on his lips.
“I can. And I think this is only the beginning,” he replies, his voice low and filled with warmth and love.
Leo grabs a rattle in the shape of a snowman, shaking it with so much enthusiasm it flies out of his hands. Ivy giggles, holding up a little doll in a skating outfit, her eyes wide with surprise.
"Mama," she says, looking up at me with a bright smile, her chubby little hands clutching the doll.
“What did you say?” I beam, leaning in closer as she looks at the doll with wide eyes.
“Mama.”
I can feel my eyes welling up with tears. I drop to my knees and kiss her face softly, whispering through the tears, "I love you so much, my beautiful girl. Say it again."
She giggles. “Mama.”
After the presents are unwrapped, we start to get the babies ready for their afternoon nap, while Caleb, Abby, and my mom are heading out to see the Christmas lights
