When I open the door, Lita is lying in the bed but is under the covers and clutching the bed sheets tightly around herself.
I’m disappointed that I missed out, and I tease her, “Aww, no peep show for me, princess?”
“No, I’m too busy dying of embarrassment,” she groans.
“For your reference,” I laugh, “Daryl tends to do a sweep of the place any time we arrive or leave, just to make sure it’s clear.”
“Good to know. It would’ve beengreatto know about twenty minutes ago.”
“Poor Daryl,” I laugh again as I bend down to take off my shoes.
“What about poor me?” Lita laughs.
I quickly strip naked and slide under the covers with Lita, then place my hand on her stomach, the memory of the thrumming noise from earlier coming to my mind. “Daryl probably thought I might fire him. You, though—you hold a position in my life right now that nobody else can fill.”
Lita looks up at me and gives me a beautiful smile. “You felt it, too? When you heard the heartbeat?”
“Yes, princess. I want to record that sound.”
“It was pretty amazing to hear,” she agrees, but I don’t think she understands what I mean.
“No, I mean, I want you to come to Galena sometime so I can literally record the sound of our baby’s heartbeat,” I tell her.
“Oh.”
She doesn’t say anything more, but she rests her head on my chest, and I keep my hand on her stomach. It’s nice just being here with her, and it’s strange because it’s not something I ever thought I would enjoy. Not fucking a woman or simply doing whatever I need to do in order to make that happen, but just being with her. It’s odd, but I like it.
After a long time, Lita says, “It probably goes without saying, but I’m going to say it anyway: I’m going to have the baby.”
I smile at her because I’d figured this out, but it’s a relief to hear her say it anyway. “I know. I’m glad.”
“Oh my god,” she moans.
“What’s wrong?” I ask, concerned that something has happened.
“Remember when I asked how traditional your family is?” Lita wrinkles her nose at me.
Considering I’m known worldwide for sleeping with basically any woman I want, I gave up on caring about disappointing my traditional family years ago, but Lita isn’t me.
“Oh, yeah, I’ve been the black sheep of my family since the day I was named Sebastian, pretty much. I’m good. I’m assuming yours is traditional, then?”
Lita nods. “I know Heather said it’s 2021, and families are all different now, but try telling that to my grandparents.”
MyHeather? I mean, what other Heather would she be talking about?
“Wait. When did you talk to Heather?”
“Before the appointment,” Lita says casually. “Did you know she’s been talking to Becky on Instagram about us since the day you told them about the baby?”
I laugh because I’m unsurprised by this. Of course, she would do something like that.
“No, I did not know that. What else did my lover say to you?”
“Your lover?” Lita shakes her head. “How ever did people manage to get the wrong idea about you two, I wonder.”
I grin at her and say, “I still can’t figure it out.”
“She told me not to hurt you. She seems very protective of you.” Lita shrugs at me.
