The next morning,Daryl takes me to Dr. Helmsley’s office. His receptionist called me this morning with a time for me to come in and see him. I sit in front of the desk in his office, and he smiles at me. He’s in his early forties and took over this practice from my family doctor a few years ago, and I see him once a quarter to get regular STD checks.

“Sebastian, it’s good to see you.”

“Hey, Doc. Long time, no see.” I grin at him because it was only a month ago that I saw him last.

“Indeed. So you said on the phone that you think you might have an STD? What happened?”

I cringe as the memory of yesterday morning comes back to me. “The condom broke when I was having sex with a woman. So I just need to get checked to make sure I’m clean.”

“I see. We’ll get blood tests done, and I’ll let you know the results.”

“I don’t intend to get an STD anytime soon. Fuck that shit.” I shake my head at him.

“You are practicing safe sex, aren’t you?” Dr. Helmsley asks.

I literally just told him I was using a condom with Lita, so I give him an incredulous look. “Yes. I always use condoms when I have sex with women.”

“And you use them during oral sex as well, of course?” He raises an eyebrow at me.

“What?”

“Sebastian, you know that STDs can be transmitted during oral sex, right?”

My blood turns to ice in my veins, and I feel like Ididknow this, but at the same time, I’m immediately running through the thousands of blow jobs I’ve had. Not a single one of them with a condom on.

I swallow heavily and shake my head. “I don’t think I’ve ever worn a condom for a blow job.”

“Which I’m assuming means you also don’t use dental dams when giving oral sex to women, either?”

“Usingwhat?!”

He pulls out an example and shows me how the latex goes between the woman and me to protect us from STDs. I’ve always been on a high horse about how I’ve never had sex without a condom. Suddenly, I feel like I’ve been playing a game of Russian roulette and just gotten really, reallylucky.

“I don’t even know what to say,” I tell him honestly. “How have I never gotten an STD if I haven’t been doing this?”

“Pure dumb luck. You can’t keep risking your health, though, Sebastian. Maybe you should take this condom breaking as a warning?” He raises his eyebrows at me.

“Maybe.”

I’m trying to process everything he’s told me, and I’m kind of in shock. It feels as though my world has been turned upside down since Saturday night. I got beaten at pool. I slept with a woman twice. The condom broke with her. That all would’ve been enough, but now I find out that, apparently, I’m meant to be using condoms for oral sex.

“Well, keep your fingers crossed that this time you got lucky again. Was the woman on contraception?”

I shake my head. “No. She said she didn’t need it, which I think is stupid.”

“Why do you think that?”

“Because what if an accident happenslike it did.” I emphasize the words to make my point.

“Except you were using a condom, and perhaps she doesn’t have a medical reason for needing birth control or a medical reason for not needing it. Nonetheless, did she take the morning-after pill?”

“I think so. I mean, I told her to take it.”

“Well, you should contact her to follow up and make sure she did. Otherwise…” he trails off ominously.

My blood runs cold again at the thought of Lita getting pregnant. It’s always been my biggest fear, randomly knocking up a groupie. It’s been at the back of my mind over the years. It’s definitely not something I want, yet I enjoy sex a lot, and I know it’s always a risk.
