Prologue

ANGIE

I staredat my phone as the hotel’s number flashed across the screen. Why was Blanche calling? I hoped she hadn’t decided that I was underqualified for the job after all. Even if she was calling to disappoint me, I should probably answer.

“Hey, sorry.” I glanced between my two best friends. “Gotta take this. It’s the hotel.”

They both nodded, and I headed toward Mina’s bedroom, swiping the answer button and bringing the phone to my ear.

“Hello?” I stepped through the door, making sure it clicked shut quietly behind me. I didn’t want an audience if she was calling to tell me she’d changed her mind and I wasn’t getting the job after all.

A deep huff that sounded very male and nothing like the older woman I’d met a couple of weeks ago came through the phone.

“Angie Mitchell?” the voice finally said.

“Yes.”

“It’s Wyatt Reed.”

Wyatt? Oh. Blanche’s grandson? Why in the world was he calling me?

“My grandmother has passed away, and I?—”

“What?” My voice rose two octaves. I couldn’t have heard that right. I’d just seen her. She was the spunkiest seventy-something-year-old I’d ever met. “What happened?”

He sighed. “She died.” His voice held quite a bit of disdain, almost laced with exasperation. “Are you still interested in the job here?”

Wow. Okay. Guess I wasn’t getting any more information on the poor woman.

I took a deep breath before replying. “I am still interested. But?—”

“Fine. Then I need you here by Thursday morning.”

“Thursday?”

“Jesus,” he muttered.

My voice might have gone a bit out of control again, but it was Monday. How did he expect me to get there in three days? “I’m on vacation. In South Carolina. I don’t?—”

“If you can’t be here by Thursday, I’ll find someone who can. It won’t be hard to find someone competent who wants this job.”

I gritted my teeth as I processed what he wasn’t saying. He didn’t think I was a good fit for the position. Which meant heknew I had very little experience in hospitality management. But I wanted this job. More than anything. And I had no intention of letting him rip it away from me.

“I’ll be there.”

A sound almost like a growl came through the line. “Fine. See you then.”

The call went silent, and I pulled the phone away from my ear. He hung up. The asshole ended the call. And he never told me what happened to Blanche.

Now I had to go out and tell the girls I had to cut our vacation short. I had less than three days to book a flight to Massachusetts, pack enough stuff to get me through the first week or two, and figure out where I would be staying. I wasn’t supposed to move there and start for another two weeks. Hopefully they could have my apartment ready early.

I’d make it work. Because once I put my mind to a goal, there was nothing stopping me. And I would prove to Wyatt that I was more than competent.

Chapter One

I eyedthe hotel as we pulled to a stop in front of it. At least Wyatt had sent a car to pick me up from the airport. Maybe this wouldn’t be too bad. Even if demanding someone start a job almost two weeks earlier than originally discussed had asshole written all over it.
