Unfortunately, I’m caught up when the pastry twists nearly burn. Then Boaz has a question about which wines we’re serving. What with one thing and another, I don’t get another look at Jade before the first guests arrive.
The doorbell rings. Glancing at the time, I curse. I should be greeting and socializing rather than trying to find a moment alone with the staff. I’m wiping my hands and making sure my mane is looking good, when the door to the kitchen opens.
“Hey.” Jade walks in with an empty tray. My mouth waters. She’s wearing fishnet stockings held up with a garter belt, a tiny black g-string, and an emerald green and black bra that pushes up her breasts into two delectable mounds. “Sapphy asked me to get more canapes. Wanna show me which ones I should take?”
I try to pick my jaw up off the floor. She’s even more stunning than I’d pictured. “Fuck.” It comes out whispered. I cough and collect my wits. “Yeah. We’d better serve the guests some food, huh? Or they might skip straight to dessert and just eat you.”
She gives me a wink. “Oh, don’t tell me I’m not on the menu tonight. A girl’s got needs, you know.”
I’m stepping toward her before I realize I’ve done it. My hands flex with the urge to touch her. I drop my voice low. “Well, you be sure to let me know if they aren’t met. Can’t have you leaving unsatisfied.”
I tell myself I’m just being friendly. A good host never lets anyone leave a party feeling unsatisfied, right? I can still focus on socializing even if I’m keeping my eye on her to make sure she’s having a good time, too.
Jade smiles. “Well, thanks. I’ll certainly keep that in mind.”
The curve of those lips. The sparkle in her eye!
All I’d like to do is lift her onto the kitchen counter, pull her legs apart and feast. I don’t need to spread her pussy to scent that she’s the tastiest thing in this kitchen.
She might be the tastiest fucking morsel I’ve ever seen.
Forget the party, forget the guests. Forget my responsibilities.
The doorbell rings again. I sigh and step back, turning to collect the last of the food from the oven.
“So, what’s the go with the party, huh?” she asks as I load her tray. “Y’all do this often?”
I grin. “Unicorn custom. Especially for a new herd. Two of us still haven’t found our bond mates.”
She looks like she wants to ask more, but at that moment, Boaz charges through the kitchen door. “Hey, Stirling.” He pauses when he sees me and Jade standing close to each other and chuckles. “You know it’s rude to hoard all the delicacies, right? Besides, Sapphy says get your butt out there and stop hiding.”
I shake my head. “Not hoarding. Not hiding either, just making sure everything is ready.”
Boaz snorts. “Oh it’s ready, my friend. Come on.”
So, I have no choice, but to be swept up in the festivities for a while.
The beginning of a party is always fairly relaxed. Everyone chats and drinks for a while. Monsters move into groups, sometimes getting cozy on a sofa or moving to one of the bedrooms for a little more privacy or quiet.
I know Sapphy and Knight worked hard putting together the guest list. They’ve been so desperate to see me and Boaz find our bond mates and add to our family, but the truth is there’s only one person I’m really interested in tonight and she’s not a monster at all.
Of course, I enjoy the lingering touches and flirting of the pretty harpy who tucks her wing around me and slides up close on the sofa. But when she notices me gazing at Jade serving drinks across the room, she kisses my cheek. “I’ll come back when you’re less occupied.”
I nod, only half noticing when she gets up to go find fun elsewhere.
It irritates me I can’t catch Jade’s eye. Is she deliberately avoiding me? She’s served everyone except me.
I’m jostled when Boaz sits next to me on the sofa pulling a lithe male with a long purple mane onto his lap. “Play with us. Don’t sit here all night pining.”
“I’m not pining,” I grumble, though I am. I know I should be flirting and getting to know other monsters. I have a responsibility to the others to fill out the herd and a human isn’t a suitable candidate. “I’m not really in the mood.”
Boaz scoffs. He knows me better than that.
He slides a hand up my thigh while his companion leans in to kiss his neck. “This bulge in your shorts says otherwise. Why don’t you just fuck her so you can get it out of your system. Seemed like she wouldn’t mind.”
He’s right, of course. I am hard just sitting here watching her, listening to the sounds of play all around me. I turn, taking in the sight of Boaz and his companion kissing passionately. It’s arousing. It’s a scene I wouldn’t normally turn down but right now, I can’t focus on anything other than Jade.
With a rueful laugh I get to my feet. “You’re right.”
