We’re a loose sort of circle. Sapphy and Knight sit on a sofa opposite and Boaz stretched out on the chaise of the lounge Jade and I are on.

“OK, now I hope you don’t think this is rude, but y’all have sex with other people, right?”

Sapphy nods. “We do.”

“And is that just a you thing, or is that a unicorn thing?”

I’m watching Jade, trying to read whether her questions reveal concerns, or interest, or something else. “It’s a unicorn thing. We don’t do monogamy the way humans do.”

Jade nods. “I think that’s smart.”

A little of the tension falls away from my shoulders. “Do you want to ask anything else? We’re pretty open. Ask whatever you like.” I’m not ready for her to stop. I want to tell her all about how things work.

“Do y’all have sex? All together?” She points to indicate the four of us.

Boaz grins. I can’t help smiling inwardly. I should have known she wouldn’t be shy the way some humans are about this subject. “Sometimes. Though, we’re more likely to include others as well, and it’s not always everyone at the same time.”

Jade smiles as she looks between me and Boaz. “So... that means you two have fucked.”

I nod. “We have. We do.”

Jade makes a low hum of delight. “I’ll be honest. That’s hot.”

As they quietly leave the room, Jade pulls back a little and looks at me in confusion. “What just happened? Did I say something wrong?”

“Not at all. They’re giving you a moment to think about this. To choose if you want to play, and who you want to play with. If the answer is no one, that’s completely up to you. If it’s only one of us, that’s fine, too. You’re in control here. You’re in control of who plays and who watches.”

“Is that how it always works?”
